Book Reviews of The Mysterious Benedict SocietyBook Review: Our Talents Can Save the World! Summary: 5 Stars
Fun, fun, fun story!!!!! Responding to an ad in the newspaper, 11 year old Reynie is brought into a wild adventure to save the world. Puzzles and clues keep you thinking, and surprising developments from beginning to end will keep you turning pages.
I love how the kids use their special gifts and talents, and how the different talents compliment one another so they can work together as a team to accomplish their mission. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the tie ups in the end (especially about Constance!). Some really memorable scenes as well. One I thought especially funny was when the children were being handed the second round of tests, a big freak out session for most of them.
Great themes about family, friendship, leadership, doing your best, confronting fears, fighting for good, and loving truth. Would happily read it again, and can't wait to read the sequel for more of their adventures together!
Book Review: A teacher's thumbs up! Summary: 5 Stars
I have NEVER read a book aloud to my fifth-grade class that caused them to beg to stay IN FOR RECESS so that I could read another chapter! I was FLOORED! I saw this novel at a school book sale, randomly chose it due to its seemingly intriguing plot and mention of "Gifted Children", which describes the group of kids I teach. It turns out that this tale not only mesmerized my kids, but kept me interested and flipping the pages as well. All teachers know there is nothing worse than being stuck in a read-aloud that mid-way through no longer captivates the reader or the listeners. No worries with this novel. The characters are fun and easy for all children to relate to. The plot is mysterious, lively, and calls for the reader to think. Don't fear the length. It flies by. I would say all kids around the age of 10 and up will love joining The Mysterious Benedict Society, and will be THRILLED to know there is already a sequel.
Book Review: The best book I ever read Summary: 5 Stars
The Mysterious Benedict Society is THE best book I have ever read. It is about four gifted kids looking for special opportunities. The kids go through three different tests with about 70 other gifted children. Only four succeed: Reynie,Stickey,Kate and Constance. Together, these four friends will try to prove that they can outsmart the evil Mr.Curtain, their biggest challenge yet. Will they succeed?
Book Review: Refreshingly Amazing Summary: 5 Stars
This was a great read. It was recommended by my nine year old cousin, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It refreshingly did not deal with magic or myths. Surprisingly for a kids book, it dealt with government, conspiracy, and puzzle solving. The series of tests in the beginning are mind-bending especially for kids and the main story is a great mystery as well. Unlike other YA series, it does not have fantastic action sequences involving other-worldly creatures but the story is well developed with many clues and riddles. There is a good mix of action versus pure investigation and spying. The best part are the four main kids. They are all relatable and equally well-developed without the author saying too much. Except for Reynie, none of the characters get lengthy background details but we still feel for them and understand them fully. It's a kid version of Brave New World mixed with mystery solving.
Book Review: Fantastic Book! Summary: 5 Stars
I looked at this book in the book store over and over again, but kept thinking it might be a little too advanced for my kids (8 and 9 years old). So glad I came on Amazon and read the reviews because we thoroughly enjoyed it! Once I'd finished reading to the kids every night I would have to stop myself from picking it up and carrying on reading it. The puzzles, the characters, the insight into human nature and adventure, all make for a great read. It's different and fresh, as well as a completely unexpected storyline from what you normally get in children's books. Don't let this thick tome deter you either, as you will get to the end and wish there were five hundred more pages. This is when you rush out to buy the second book, and I don't know what we're going to do when we get to the end of the third? Keep writing Mr. Stewart, and we'll keep reading!
