While working at Kinko's in downtown Nashville, I often saw Victor Wooten come in and run his own copies. He seemed nice, quirky, always engaged but moments from wandering off mentally to artistic places. I knew of his musical prowess, and was impressed by his unpretentious demeanor.
When someone suggested to me that I read "The Music Lesson," I jumped at it, thinking I'd find out more about this legendary bass player's background, discography, and upbringing. This was not the case. This is not an autobiography by any means, and neither is it a by-the-numbers look at music. It is, however, a captivating tale told in a breezy manner. Within a few pages, my disappointment had turned to enjoyment.
Yes, "The Music Lesson" becomes progressively more new-agey as it moves along, but Wooten reins in those aspects to keep pointing at the practical, though thoroughly unconventional, means of getting to know Music and becoming a partner in the creative aspect. Though the wording is different than I might use, many of the concepts are ones I've experienced as a novelist, tapping into a creative pulse that is much bigger than my own, letting go of the book- and head-knowledge to find something much more fulfilling in the artistic vein.
I'm not a musician, but the ideas here (particularly in the first half) still work within a literary context. This is a high concept book about art and music, going against the grain of "practice-practice-practice" and "study-study-study." I believe that we are all made in the image of the Creator, and in that sense I can relate to Wooten's ideas, to the thrill of tapping into ideas bigger than our own, walking hand and hand with the Creator, and putting to use the minds we've been given.
I wish I'd read "The Music Lesson" while still working at Kinko's so that I could have discussed it with Victor himself. I can imagine his bright smile and that twinkle in his eye. While Victor and I would agree to disagree on a few things, I think we'd find common ground as artists. Maybe, just maybe, I'll see him walking an alleyway in the near future, or crouching beneath a bridge with his Uncle Clyde.
