Book Reviews of The Mixing Engineer's Handbook, Second EditionBook Review: great resource Summary: 5 Stars
I found this to be a great resource that helps me to think inside & outside the box when it comes to mixing music.
Book Review: Simple and Informative Summary: 5 Stars
Great book! Very concise and packed full of interviews with top engineers. Very recommended.
Book Review: Great information - could be condensed Summary: 4 Stars
This book is great for a home recording desktop reference. The interviews with all the 'star' mixing engineers were interesting but none of them specialized in my particular genre (metal) so they were of limited use.
This book was written for mostly for hardware but the process is basically the same for home recording mixing interfaces. The principles of frequency clashes, instrument ranges, panning, etc. don't change because you are using a computer.
This book would be perfect if it condensed all of the practical information into a 'pocket guide' type book, cut out the interviews and slashed the price in half. Still, it was a good investment as is.
If you are doing a home recording project, I would read one of the general home recording books all the way through first and then get this book for the more advanced process of mixing.
Book Review: some good nuggets, but not enough Summary: 4 Stars
There are some interesting tips and tricks mentioned in this book, and it increased my confidence (after reading the many different and contradictory approaches in the interviews) in following my own instincts next time I do a home recording project. The main problem is that almost everything in the book is there twice- organized by interview, and again by subject area. So it's like reading the same book twice, organized two different ways. That said, most of the content is informative, and just keep in mind the amount of content is half of what you'd expect based on the page count, before deciding to buy.
Book Review: Great read Summary: 4 Stars
For those looking for a technical manual on how to set your compressor for tracking bass or snare you may need a different book. Although there is technical material in the book, it is approached from a broader perspective. That being said this is a great source of knowledge on the overall philosophy and process of mixing. The book is written very well and I found it very easy and enjoyable to read which makes it worth every penny. It's the kind of book you'll read more than once and enjoy, if your really into recording and mixing audio.
