Book Reviews of the The Michel Legrand Songbook: Piano/Vocal/ChordsCustomer Review: Muddy arrangements but passable Summary: 3 Stars
Honestly, I would think Legrand is old enough now that he would want his writing to be preserved for posterity, and surely not the muddy arrangements found in this book to be his legacy? I realize most of these songs exist in musical scores but let's face it, the average person is not going to rent a musical theater score for hundreds of dollars to recreate him, and wouldn't he want people to learn from his superior piano versions? Or does he have contempt for us fans who just want to sound like we're listening to the master himself? Now that the 20th Century is over I am on a personal crusade to let the music publishers know it is time we had decent sheet music for composers such as Legrand! Music has moved on, so the people trying to recreate the past are your only hope to keep making money off of this stuff. Please, stop selling us this drivel and give us quality stuff to work with! (I can't believe you don't have a good enough arranger on the payroll to put to the task.) And, MORE. Windmills of Your Mind is great but why only one or two songs from Les Desmoiselles de Rochefort and Les Parapluies de Cherbourg? I had to give this 3 stars because it is passable but it is by no means comprehensive nor will it substitute for playing off of recordings, as it only provides an outline to work with. Alas.
