Book Reviews of The Memory Keeper's Daughter: A Novel

Book Review: this book ended my reading slump!
Summary: 5 Stars

I started this book on a snowbound day, just like Kim Edwards started the first chapter and I finished it in two days. I can't say I found it "gripping" , but it is the kind of enjoyable, flowing read that you look forward to sitting down with (for hours!)It's one that you really think about the characters and even though the Dr. is given most of the blame, you still are able to empathize with him. It's a good lesson of how lies and secrets can eat at one's soul. It's a story of love-but not at all sappy. I also thought she did a great job with a very positive portrayal of a Down's syndrome child. This story could appeal to many different types of readers, and although there may have been a little bit of dragging at times-I think that was neccesary to reflect the disinegration of the marriage etc. All in all, a very entertaining tale;full of happy and sad.

Book Review: A must-read
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is one of the most compelling stories I've ever read. I didn't zip through it in a night or two like I do with other, lighter fare. The lifelong impacts of a decision made by a young doctor on a snowy night who loves his wife are amazingly told by a talented author. I found myself slowing down to process and savor every detail, frequently re-reading a passage to fully comprehend that passage's impact on the rest of the story. Kim Edwards' ability to tell each character's story in a manner that makes us see them as neither sinner nor saint, hero nor villain, but as people who struggle with the decisions they make in response to that first, fateful decision is amazing.

I can't think of another book that I recommend more highly than this one. If it's not in your personal library, it should be.

Book Review: Absolutely loved this book!
Summary: 5 Stars

Well I'm shocked at how many have rated this book poorly and goes to show everyone has different likes in what they read. I have not been so interested in a book in so long. I could not put this down and became incredibly enthralled with each of the characters ... all for differing reasons. I almost felt as though I was somewhere mixed in, literally within, their lives. I understood them and their actions and was moved in so many ways. It was amazing how well Kim was able to age each of the characters so well and in a way that was easily followed by the reader. I've never actually gone back and read a book twice, but I have a feeling this one won't collect too much dust!

My only complaint ... i felt a small loose end with Rosemary. I wished she popped up one more time (perhaps the funeral).

Book Review: Amazing book that left me deeply moved
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It is a simple story of mistakes and cover-ups that haunt a family for a lifetime. The quality of writing is stellar. The scenes and emotions are so vivid that I felt that I was almost there as this family's story unfolded. I felt like I was made to see the story of this family's pain through many different prisms and lenses (just like in real families) and each one of those views left an imprint inside me and moved me. It is a truly remarkable book, and I will remember it for a long time to come. I read the book over a brutal 40 hour journey (many delays and flight cancellations) but I remained largely oblivious to it all. The book had transported me to another world.... I will read everything Kim Edwards writes! Looking forward to the next book!

Book Review: What a Lens to View a Life Altering Decision Through
Summary: 5 Stars

I found this book in the New York Times in an article about books that did not do well in hard cover but sold well in paperbook. Never having heard of Kim Edwards before, I have not come across such an intelligently, beautifully written book that could not put down and truly devoured. We live in such a digital age now that I found the metaphor of the camera so sweet and poignant especially because much like the world we live in today, we cannot express our true feelings to one another but often find it easier to capture emotions via a physical object and relay them to the world that way......it's less vulnerable, less risky, there's less at stake. As much as things have changed, at the basic level, we have all really stayed the same....doing our best to work out our family history and hurts.
