Book Reviews of The Marlinspike Sailor

Book Review: Fun to read but not a how-to book
Summary: 4 Stars

Pros: It's well written and fun to read. It's full of historic information and anecdotes. The illustrations represent a wide variety of interesting projects .

Cons: The book is very uneven. Some projects are explained in details with patterns and step-by-step diagrams. Some have little or no explanation. I also noticed that some knot-tying diagrams are inaccurate and near-impossible to follow.

I recommend the book as a fun and engaging overview of marlinspike seamanship, but if you want to learn the craft, this book alone is not sufficient.

Book Review: The history behind the knots
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is excellent in showing some of the most useful knots and other various techniques that assist the sailor in day to day life. It is also very informative in the background behind the topics in question and is written in a very colorful fashion. Many good sea stories in it as well. The only drawback I would say is the lack of more decortive knots. Many interesting projects but definitely not just knots.

Book Review: Knots to you !!!
Summary: 4 Stars

Although this book is an interesting addition to my bookshelf, it seems to be more concerned with ornamental knots and rope work. I've wanted to get for years and I think anyone who buys it will be happy with it as an introduction to splices, etc. It's got a good feel. If you're determined to get into 18th century maritime sailorcraft, it won't be the last book you order. ARRRH!

Book Review: Wonderful resource in this technical age.
Summary: 4 Stars

As a US Navy First Class Bos'n Mate, this book is a fantastic text for keeping our arts alive and accessible to the novice. This will be my second copy as the first was 'pinched' by a colleague. I have completed at least four of the projects with great results(yeah, yeah, tooting my own horn. I know). H.G. Smith helps define beauty in simplicity, form truly follows function.

Book Review: A handy little boook
Summary: 4 Stars

A chatty and charming little notebook of traditional skills for working traditional 3-ply laid line. Owners of classic craft will find it useful, and those with an interested in traditional sailing skills will find it a must-have for their library. I'm already contemplating burying my gaff-rigged catboat in acres of netting, woven rugs and baggywrinkle.
