Book Reviews of The Mark (Henry Parker Novels)Book Review: Jason Pinter's Suspense Thriller is a Spellbinding Debut! Summary: 5 Stars
Having frantically ripped through the pages of Jason Pinter's fantastic thrillers, "The Fury" and "The Darkness," I could not wait for March 30, 2010 for his next block buster, "The Invited," so I turned to his earlier Henry Parker novels.
"The Mark" is Jason's first novel, written when he was 27 years old. While his humor had not yet been developed to that of his later novels, his ability to tell a story and keep the readers on the edge of their chairs was there from the onset. It is obviously worthy of his best selling accolades.
Young Oregonian, Henry Parker recently graduated from college and has been hired as a writer for the New York Gazette sitting just yards away from his idol, the heralded writer Jack O'Donnell. A newbie relegated to writing obituaries, Jack threw Henry a bone that would change his life.
Following an interview in a seedy New York City neighborhood of ex-con Luis Guzman for a bi-line in one of Jack's stories, Henry decides that there is something more to Guzman's story than he let on. Accordingly, he returns to the apartment to find out more. Upon his arrival he is greeted by screams coming from the apartment. Alarmed he knocked on the door which was opened by a man pointing a gun at his head. Guzman and his wife are tied up and bleeding in the background.
Fueled by his lack of response to an emergency call from his former girlfriend, Henry's instincts take over and he puts himself in harm's way. A struggle ensues and against all odds, Parker comes out on top saving Guzman and his wife while the gunman lies dead from his own gun. In shock, Parker staggers out into the streets with the homeless.
At first light, people are staring at him with fear and he sees his picture in a local paper with a "Cop Killer" headline. The Guzman's and the building superintendent depict Henry as a drug crazed killer and the person who was trying to kill them as the hero cop who gave his life protecting them. From there the roller coaster chase begins with the mafia, cops and the FBI determined to shot first and ask questions later.
Wounded, alone and his life ruined, Henry meets an unlikely ally whose friendship puts her life is in equal jeopardy.
I enjoyed this one sit 367-page read immensely and am ready to dive into the next two books in this series --"The Guilty" and "The Stolen. "
Summary of The Mark (Henry Parker Novels)Right as I'm about to die, I realize all the myths are fake. There's no white light at the end of a tunnel. My life isn't flashing before my eyes. All I can think about is how much I want to live. I moved to New York City a month ago to become the best journalist the world had ever seen. To find the greatest stories never told. And now here I am?Henry Parker, twenty-four years old and weary beyond rational thought, a bullet one trigger pull from ending my life. I can't run. Running is all Amanda and I have done for the past seventy-two hours. And I'm tired. Tired of knowing the truth and not being able to tell it. Five minutes ago I thought I had the story all figured out. I knew that both of these men?one an FBI agent, the other an assassin?wanted me dead, but for very different reasons. If I die tonight?more people will die tomorrow.
