Book Reviews of The Mammy

Book Review: Funny and heartwarming
Summary: 5 Stars

Brendan O'Carroll set the tone of the book early on when he showed newly-widowed Agnes Browne on the day of her husband's death. Instead of what would normally be portrayed as a sad event, this particular scene was one of the funniest in the book. And there were a lot. I cannot kepp track of the number of times when I just had to stop reading for a while and just laugh out loud at a particular comment that one of the characters (usually Agnes) made. This book has its share of hilarious as well as touching moments. Enjoyable!

Book Review: Being Irish Is Not Always Easy
Summary: 5 Stars

Mamy is a wonderful, touching story of a fatherless family struggling to survive in Dublin,Ireland. My wife and I enjoyed this book so much that we ended up reading the remaining two books in the series, which we also enjoyed very much. However, I would rank Mamy the best of the three.

We have also given copies of Mamy away as gifts and have heard from every friend that they also enjoyed the book so much that they too purchased the other books. Mamy is a sad story of a difficult life, but also very entertaining.

Book Review: Laugh, Cry, Repeat as neccessary.
Summary: 5 Stars

You either love this kind of story or you don't. I may as well admit up front to being part Irish - and that I loved this book. Who but an Irishman could start a story with the mother of seven children registering to get widow's benefits when her husband has very recently died - as in that afternoon. At that point you either stop reading or you can't wait to see what happens next (as I couldn't wait.) In the end I have to to say this book was way too short - which is one of the best compliments I can give an author.

Book Review: One of Ireland's best comics!
Summary: 5 Stars

I should've expected nothing less of Brendan O'Carroll. This book had me laughing and remembering the memories of people and faces I have of northside Dublin, much in the way Roddy Doyle did with his Barrytown Trilogy. How true to reality this story is. He has accurately portrayed family life in Dublin, at least as I've seen it. In addition, O'Carroll had a delicious plot that really captured my heart. I'm off now to find books two and three in the series. Until then, I just may read The Mammy again.

Book Review: BRILLIANT!
Summary: 5 Stars

After listening to an interview with Brendan O'Carroll on NPR, I knew I had to buy this book for my mammy, who was raised in Dublin. She was delighted. But true to form, being me mammy, she had to pass some judgement, stating that it was a bit vulgor in parts. I felt it was brilliant. The series of escapades truely captured the feelings of pride, love, and humour in an Irish family. The ending is priceless, but the reader is left hungry for more. Prepare to laugh and cry yourself to tears.
