Book Reviews of The Making of Pride and Prejudice (BBC)

Book Review: Delightful accompaniment to the DVD/Video
Summary: 5 Stars

This delightful book telling of the making of the 1995 mini-series of Pride and Prejudice gives real insight into the preparation of what must be considered the definitive version on film of this beloved novel. Like the featurette on the DVD, it explains a great deal about the costumes, the choreography, the musical score and determing locations for the various well known places that the audience visits during the program. What is not on the featurette and is in the book is insight into what the performers were feeling during this major film event, expecially the primary characters of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy portrayed by Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. It is very interesting to hear their thoughts as they approached their roles. And it is also very apparent as you go through this book that everyone responsible for actually getting this on film loved the book and are fans of Jane Austen. Very nice indeed.

Book Review: Much better than I had envisioned
Summary: 5 Stars

Since I have become completely and uncharacteristically obsessed with this movie, I decided to order this book even though I was afraid it may take the magic out of the A&E production by showing the background reality and details of making the film. But I have found that this is not the case. The book gives really good insights into the characters, especically Mr. Darcy, and I found it facinating to read about the hidden motivations and feelings as interpreted by Colin Firth and especially, Andrew Davies, the screenwriter. Really good. But my plea to the producers - please, please do a sequel even though I know you'll not have Jane Austen's help. If you read the reviews under the video section you know that you have a built-in audience who would be willing to pay a lot to see more of this beautiful production.

Book Review: Fabulous book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was uncertain as to whether I should purchase this book and thought it might just be a bunch of useless information bound together to capitalize on the popularity of A&E's P&P. After reading other reviews I purchased this book and am very happy I did so. The "behind the scenes" of all the planning, research, etc that went into this production was very interesting and entertaining to read. I absolutely love P&P and was very pleased with the A&E adaptation of it. The production of this film was done with painstaking attention paid to detail and the book explains all of it. I especially liked the explanation of the homes utlized for the filming (to represent Pemberly, Longbourne, Rosings, etc). The purchase of this book will not disappoint.

Book Review: Invaluable for P&P lovers
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Making of Pride and Prejudice" is a must-have book if you enjoyed the BBC production, the novel or are interested in film adaptations of great novels. This book provides a fascinating and comprehensive overview of the making of this terrific mini-series -- from casting to location scouting, from production design to music composition, and from script to filming and beyond. Real insights are provided into Andrew Davies' thought process in writing the script. The difficulties of finding and scheduling the locations are outlined in very interesting detail, with a map of sites. Actors comment on their casting and on the first read-through. A particular highlight is an interview with Colin Firth. Order this book now!

Book Review: If you loved the movie, you'll want this book!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a beautiful book, crammed full of interesting information. I loved reading the interviews with the cast members. I never really thought about how much work and attention to detail that the people "behind-the-scenes" went through to make such a production happen. It was especially fun to see the actors out of their 'Pride and Prejudice' make-up; some of them looking entirely different than the character they portrayed. The sections on how many of the people responsible for making this mini-series so wonderful [director, writer, producer, etc.] was enlightening. How they 'saw' what they wanted and then made it happen. The whole book was delightful and I'd highly recommend it.
