Book Reviews of The Making and Un-Making of a MarineBook Review: Superb insights from a guy who was a marine and has resolved lots of stuff Summary: 5 Stars
This book, The Making and Un-making of a Marine by Lawrence Winters" has many insights of value to veterans, the families of veterans, physicians and allied healthcare personnel who deal with veterans, and anyone interested in public health related to combat veterans and their families.
It focuses upon the experience of one American veteran, the author. It tells his life story (starting with his grandparents) as a way of explaining why he decided to enlist. Then, after describing his experience in Viet Nam, he presents the most revelatory portion of the book - the many steps, the long and winding road, his way back, his highway out of a jungle of experiences and the horror of some of what he lived through. This is a man who returned from Viet Nam and became a taxi driver, then a fisherman, then a carpenter, then a therapist, and is now helping other veterans deal with their own experiences. This is a success story!
This is about how one person rebuilt a life - or, as he was still a kid when he enlisted and had not really had time to construct a true and healthy life, it is the story of how he built a rewarding life from scratch and became someone who is now actively helping other people each find his or her own unique way. It is the story of the return of a man who has grown wiser the hard way, but he has grown pretty savvy and he really can help. I am a medical writer and in writing for physicians about the experience of veterans and what is needed to heal the emotional and mental wounds many veterans have experienced, this is a book I cite a lot. It is right to mention that it is certainly a book for the families and friends of veterans, a touchstone, an ultimately encouraging touchstone. For this is a guy who has been there, lived it, gone through it, and come out into daylight in a way that has made him a whole and healing presence.

Summary of The Making and Un-Making of a MarineThe Making and Un-making of a Marine is the record of one man's journey from the hell of the Vietnam War to the redemption of his soul. In this personal memoir by Larry Winters, we witness the loss of innocence of a young boy who's forced to take the role of a man by his father's own hand, then watch as he struggles to reshape his identity as both man and patriot while suppressing his rage against an unjust war. Surviving the atrocities of Viet Nam, Winters learns how to heal his invisible wounds and is reborn triumphant. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the pathway of warriorhood.
