Excellent early Nora - romance tales of the four McKade brothers (in two separate novels) - Rafe, Jared, Devin and Shane - all drop dead gorgeous with their black hair and green eyes (each brother having a different shade of green-yummy). If you are looking for light, enjoyable reading, then the McKade brothers' saga is perfect. The first book, Rafe & Jared McKade, starts out with bad boy Rafe McKade returning to his hometown of Antietam, MD, after an absence of 10 years, ready to show the townspeople he has made something of himself as a real estate developer. The town has a bit of history dating back from the Civil war and the renowned woods where a soldier from each Confederate and Blue army met up and died. The Yankee solder was taken in by the McKade ancestors, only to die from terminal war wounds while the Confederate soldier was dragged to the old Barlow House on the hill and attempted to be nursed to health by Abigail Barlow, mistress of the house, while her husband, cold bloodily shot the wounded soldier so his wife would not even so much as touch the rebel. Both the woods and the house are haunted in a sympathetic, interesting type of way. Rafe decides to renovate the old Barlow house and turn it into a B&B. Here is where Reagan Bishop, owner of the town's antique shop, Past Times, plays into the story. As the two bump heads while trying to work together, an easy, comfortable tale of love, struggle and history come together.
In the second half of the book, the story switches over to older brother, Lawyer Jared McKade. Jared meets up with newcomer, Savannah Morningstar when he goes to visit her on an estate matter of her deceased father. Savannah has purchased a small cabin in the town of Antietam and is determined to stake roots for herself and her son. Savannah is a product of being an unwed teenage mother, struggling to make ends meet after being abandoned by both mother (when she was very young) and father (after finding out his 16-year old daughter was pregnant). Savannah struggled for 8 years on her own, doing just about anything to keep a roof over her and her son's head and food on the table. While living in New Orleans and painting scenery and people on the streets with her little Bryan sitting next to her, she caught a lucky break when her artwork was recognized and she was hired to illustrate drawings for children's books. With a steady salary, her trip to Antietam was the start of her and Bryan's new "rooted" life. Sparks fly between Jared and Savannah on both a professional and personal level from the moment they meet. Jared cannot let go of his growing feelings for Savannah, nor can he let go of her mysterious past. Light reading with predictable endings, but definitely enjoyable.
