You can bet if Nicholas Sparks puts a book out there, it is going to sell. This scenario is due to his expertise as a storyteller extraordinaire. His latest work, The Lucky One will be touted by readers as one of his best works. Having written books like Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, The Notebook, readers know what they can expect when they buy a Nicholas Sparks book...great characters, great storyline and an electricity that stays with you long after you have finished reading the story.
Sparks main character in The Lucky One is ex-marine, Logan Thibault. Logan has served three tours of duty in Iraq and believes his survival is due to a lucky picture he found of an unknown woman. Once he completes his tour of duty, he walks from Colorado to Hampton, North Carolina in search of the woman in the picture.
Once he arrives in North Carolina, he takes a job at a dog training facility where he meets Nana, the elderly owner of the facility, Elizabeth, her granddaughter and her young son, Ben. Elizabeth, he discovers is the woman in his lucky picture.
The storyline stays true and builds to an exciting climax. There are stories within this story that adds story interest. Sparks knows how to build a story and keep a reader anxiously turning pages.

Book Review: Sparks Shines Again Summary: 5 Stars
I was introduced to the writings of Nicholas Sparks by a close friend (done indirectly with the DVD of The Notebook). Since then, I have had the wonderful opportunity to read a number of his books. Please understand, I've not usually one for romantic novels (my interests are far less, should I say, 'interesting'). Nonetheless, I began to read Sparks' novels and was struck by the clarity in his style. He also has the gift of bringing the reader into the story and introducing one to his characters so that you feel as though you know them. And The Lucky One succeeds in doing just that.
The Lucky One tells of a romance that is guided by Providence. A soldier finds a picture of a lovely woman in the desert of Iraq and soon discovers it brings him luck. After escaping near death during the war he returns home to Colorado with a mission: Find the woman and pay her back. He is unsure how this will come about, but knowing his duty sets off to find her with his trusty German shephard Zeus. Using common sense investigative skill, he finds her in North Carolina- I've never been to N.C., but feel like I have due to Sparks' books. And I love the place. Sparks takes you through the emotions that are found only in true love (attraction, excitement, past histories kept locked away in the heart, courage, fear, joy, attention, tragedy, and triumph).
Other characters are introduced and you come to love, loathe, and even understand them. I could not put the book down, but instead chose to lay my other reading aside in order to finish this book. So far, it is the best of the few I've read. As a Desert Storm Veteran, I found myself cheering with the heroes of the story. I loved the book and now have added a love of the romantic novel to my genre of yearly books. Thank you Nocholas Sparks and thank you Martin!!!
Book Review: A man in search of his destiny Summary: 5 Stars
Nicholas Sparks does it again with his latest novel, The Lucky One, a novel about an ex-marine's quest to search for the woman in the photograph who has been his lucky charm throughout his tours in Iraq and the relationship that develops once they meet.
Logan Thibault is an easy-going and charming man who walks cross-country accompanied by Zeus (his dog) to find the mystery woman in the picture. As the story develops, Logan finally meets the woman in the picture. Simply wanting to be close to her to figure out how he 'owes' her for saving his life so many years as his lucky charm, he begins to build a relationship with her (Elizabeth 'Beth'), her son (Ben), and her grandmother (Nana). There is also an integral involvement of the selfish, self-absorbed Keith Clayton to the story.
Sparks tells the story from three perspectives, each evident by the chapter title. The three characters each have different ways of thinking and Sparks' writing style for each corresponding chapter easily relates this to the reader. This is an excellent way of telling this story since it would, most likely, be rather difficult (if not impossible) to tell the story simply from one point of view. As expected, Sparks' storytelling is stellar both at developing the relationship between characters and unfolding a wonderful story with an emotional finish.
After reading this book, you can't help but wonder, who is the lucky one in the story? In my opinion, there are several lucky ones in this story. It's amazing how a story simply based on a photograph can unfold into such a beautiful work of fiction. If you are a Nicholas Sparks fan, you won't be disappointed.
Book Review: Wonderful story with an emotional reading Summary: 5 Stars
Logan Thibault is an ex-marine who has just finished his third tour of Iraq. While serving, he found a picture in the dirt of a young woman, which quickly became his lucky charm. Not only did he win money at poker games, but he also escaped death several times during his marine days.
Now that Logan is out of the military, he's determined to find the woman in the picture. Logan starts walking across the country from Colorado to the small town of Hampton, North Carolina to do just that. Once he arrives in town, he discovers that the woman's name is Elizabeth Clayton, and she lives with her grandmother Nana and her young son Ben. The three of them reside in a house that is attached to Nana's dog kennel, where they train and board dogs. They just happen to be looking for some help when Logan shows up. Nana quickly hires him and Logan and Elizabeth's romance progresses from there.
I would have to say this is easily the best story I've listened to by Mr. Sparks. The characters had me engaged from the beginning all the way to the final chapter. The budding romance between Logan and Elizabeth had me biting my nails and crossing my fingers, especially when her ex-husband (Ben's father) shows up in the story.
John Bedford Lloyd added great narration to the story with strong emotion and a talent for making you fall for Logan, too! If you've never had the pleasure of reading a Nicholas Sparks novel, I'd strongly suggest you give this one a shot!
Armchair Interviews agrees.
Book Review: A deeply romantic love story told with depth and passion Summary: 5 Stars
Sparks fly in this wonderfully romantic novel that makes a reader think that anything is possible, that fate or destiny may have other plans for each of us, and that if we follow our hearts we may just end up being The Lucky One.
Nicholas Sparks creates a deeply emotional story of a battle-worn marine who holds most dear a photograph of an unknown woman. Throughout tours of duty, he clings to the belief that the photo is responsible for keeping him safe, and he later sets out to find the woman in the photograph.
The Lucky One makes you believe in true love and fate. In some ways, I am reminded of how I felt in my early 20s when I read dozens of Danielle Steele novels. For me, she was the queen of romance. In this case, I'd say Sparks is the king of romance. He certainly creates intriguing characters and seemingly impossible odds.
If you enjoyed The Notebook and Message in a Bottle, you'll love The Lucky One! No other male author does romance quite like Nicholas Sparks!
