Book Reviews of The Lords of Discipline: A NovelBook Review: LOVED IT! Summary: 5 Stars
I picked this book up at the recommendation of a friend. I was skeptical because I am a 38 yr old woman and the military genre is not my thing. I had never read anything by Pat Conroy before. I simply loved this book! It is expertly written and builds characters that you come to love and hate. It delves into the inner workings of military academy and how the cadets deal with life there. The book builds comradery and loyalty between the characters and you actually feel that as you read it. I cannot say enough good things about this book, if in doubt, just try it!!
Book Review: Simply brilliant Summary: 5 Stars
Having just finished this book, I find it fitting to report to you all that I started to read this novel on ANZAC Day, April 25, the day we Aussies commemorate our wartime heroes, both past and present. For Conroy's beautifully written novel, revolving around life in the 1960's world of an American military college, epitomises all that we have come to realise that the ANZAC's stood for - courage, steadfastness, loyalty, and, of course, that great Aussie word and ethos, "mateship".
The first Conroy I have read - but certainly won't be the last.
Book Review: Best Piece of Fiction From This Generation Summary: 5 Stars
I must read and a must re-read, in my opinion. Conroy has an amazing control of the English language and paints vivid scenes with words. During reads, there are several moments where I can feel myself almost looking over the character's shoulders, experiencing exactly what he sees. One of my favorite works of all time, which says a lot since I don't typically enjoy fiction outside of the classics.
Book Review: Excellent read! Summary: 5 Stars
Was looking for a good book to read on vacation and this one did not disappoint. It brought back my own memories of going through hell week many years ago but their lives as 'plebes' made mine look like a day on the beach. Nothing really bad to say about the story except that I would say the last 100 pages went a lot faster than the 1st 400 (maybe like a 3 hr. movie that could have been 2 hrs.).
Book Review: A comment on Pat Conroy's writing Summary: 5 Stars
I think this is one of the best books I have ever read. It does tend to be long and wordy, but his descriptive style is excellent, the characters are real to life and seem to jump out of the pages.
The plot is moving and the ending is gripping. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, and I am not easily satisified.
