Book Reviews of The Lord of the RingsBook Review: Need I say more Summary: 5 Stars
First read this when I was but a wee lad, great books a must read, why it reminds me of when I was a wee wee lad and my brother Charles Chadwick told me that he thought Smedley (a bona fide little person who live up the road from us) had some firecrackers and maybe we should pay him a visit and maybe get to light some off! Well we hopped on the tractor and drove down to his house, farm country if you must know.We saw him from a distance shooting hoops on his makeshift gravel court we drove up and he of course had a puzzled look on his face since we had never visited him before, we just rode the same school bus. Well as an ice breaker we played a game of horse, he won. Then he challenged us to a game, which hardly seemed fair since he was a little person like the Dwarf in "Lord of The Rings" , we took him up on it and were soundly trounced, he had an amazing hook shot. Well my brother Charles Chadwick decided to broach the subject of firecrackers and Smedley didn't know what he was talking about, we followed him around abit and he showed us a 5 gallon bucket of grease for the tractors, we had never seen such a quantity of grease in our lives, pretty cool. As we were looking at the grease my brother Charles Chadwick told Smedley that he had dropped a quarter in the grease and he could have it if he dug it out, without hesitation Smedley reached elbow deep into the grease and then my brother Charles Chadwick laughed and said he didn't really, we all laughed, some more than others and thats about all I remember about that visit. But I digress, Lord of the Rings all the way! I found the Silmarillion a little difficult but you cant go wrong with the trilogy.
Book Review: Time to revisit the original Summary: 5 Stars
With the movies based on this trilogy now coming out, it's time for those who read Tolkien years ago, to re-read the original stories. For those being introduced to Tolkien for the first time, read the books, either before or after seeing the movies. These are the books on which nearly all later fantasy fiction is based. This sweeping story presented in The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King includes memorable characters and a world full of Hobbits, wizards, and numerous nasty creatures, such as the Nazgul and Orcs. It is the story of a quest: to return the One Ring to the fires from whence it was created. Frodo Baggins, who inherited the ring from his cousin Bilbo, is the ring bearer, who in the company of men, Gandalf the Grey, Gimli the dwarf, Legolas the elf, and other Hobbits makes the dangerous journey to the volcano Orodruin. However, the ring is magic, and those who have possessed it are loath to part with it. Lord of the Rings is written in a style that may be unfamiliar to many younger readers. Also, there are many names, hard to pronounce, some people and places having more than one name. But those who read fantasy (or Russian novels) can handle these. This is a story worth any effort to get through, and many readers find themselves visiting this fictional world over and over. Most fantasy readers will find The Lord of the Rings fascinating reading. Don't forget to include The Hobbit, the story of Bilbo's finding the ring and defeating Smaug, the fire-breathing dragon.
Book Review: Outstanding edition of the LOTR Trilogy! - (0618260587) Summary: 5 Stars
I have to say that this edition is outstandingly the best one out there today. Houghton Mifflin has done a great job at compiling and designing the books. The set is particularly beautiful with artwork by the already famous Alan Lee. I have to agree that this edition surpass the 1988 edition (ISBN: 0395489326) by FAR! The 1988 edition was poorly done and had sloppy printing.
Books are well-produced with sturdy hardcovers. The binding is bound in red cloth. All three books have dustcovers with extraordinary artwork by Alan Lee - each shows a scene from the book that it is in. All three books have a map of "Middle-Earth" on the inside of the front and back flaps. The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers show the whole map of "Middle-Earth". Whereas, The Return of the King shows the concentrated map of Rohan, Gondor, and Mordor section only. I think it is very fitting since The Return of the King takes place around Mordor. It would be even better if Houghton Mifflin made a fold-out map of "Middle-Earth" to go along with this edition.
The drawback of this edition is the glossy format that can reflect glare light that may disturb some readers. The books are somewhat large and overweight, but very solid and sturdy.
This edition of The Lord of the Rings is very compatable with the Houghton Mifflin's edition of "The Hobbit" (ISBN: 0395873460) and "The Silmarillion" (ISBN: 0618391118). Both editions have the same format and size as the LOTR SET. I truly recommend all!
Book Review: One Story You Can't Go Wrong With... Summary: 5 Stars
Whether you are familiar with the most beloved fantasy story of all time or you are late in coming, you will be sure to enjoy Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Filled with danger, excitement, love, sadness, and poetic language, this story has yet to bow down to any others of its genre. It is the cream of its author's life as well as a delight to readers in every corner of the world. The tale tells of a small hobbit, Frodo Baggins, whose brave decisions regarding one small ring determine the fate of the entire Middle Earth. If one delves deeply into the text, he will find ancient wisdom hidden as well as the answers to many of life's toughest questions. Furthermore, I would encourage you to buy Alan Lee's illustrated version of Tolkien's story. His watercolors are astounding and bring a unique vision to the story. The pages containing the illustrations are thick and smooth and scattered throughout the story. The books are a good reading size and easier to handle than the versions where all threes books are squashed together in one binding. (Which, is good for a collector's edition, but not necessarily for the easiest reading.) So if you are looking for some exhausting yet wonderful reading, pick up The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. You can't go wrong with a good story. Though, if pressed, I'd count it among the best of the best...far beter than simply *good*!
Book Review: This is without a doubt the best book I have ever read! Summary: 5 Stars
I hadn't picked up this book until I was in 6th grade. Before then, I was mindlessly infatuated with the Harry Potter series, which I regret now. I remember I was in the movie theaters and one of the previews was for "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", and all I could think was that it was really a rather strange looking movie. The boys in my grade were all beginning to read the LOTR series and I was wondering what all the fuss was about. So I bought the books and before long I fell in love with them. They were the most fascinating, amazing books I have ever read in my life, and they were pretty much the only books that have ever touched me. In fact at the end of ROTK, I cried the whole night, mostly because I felt like my journey through Middle Earth and the time with its inhabitants had ended. Tolkien did an amazing job at engaging his readers and indeed by the end I felt like I had shared in all of the characters hardships as well as their joys. I am now 13 and still love Lord of the Rings and was able to relive all the magic and glory in Peter Jackson's amazing movies. Yet, I was a bit disappointed in ROTK because they never really elaborated on many of my favorite parts of the book. But all in all the LOTR trilogy were the best movies ever made. I have never read a book yet that has lived up to the standards of LOTR, and I know I never will.
