Book Reviews of The Lord of the Rings SketchbookBook Review: Enchanting and Informative Summary: 4 Stars
A must-have for Alan Lee fans. Contains loads of sketches, paintings, and personal musings on his experience while on the set of Peter Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS Saga.
Book Review: Excellent sketchbook-like reference source Summary: 4 Stars
Very nice sketches. Interesting to see early ideas for characters and scenes. It would be better if the format of the book was larger.

Book Review: A Disappointment Summary: 3 Stars
While there is absolutely no doubt that Alan Lee is a very talented artist, I was completely disappointed with the text. Let me make sure I am clear. The art is stunning. To see the "sketches" that led up to the color renderings (which are few) is very interesting and fun. What was disappointing was the narrative written by Alan Lee. The text is basically a much stripped down journal of his six years in New Zealand working on Peter Jackson's LOR. The same old adage, the book is better than the movie is even more applicable to the LOR. Given that, it would have been more "balanced" if the author would have included how he was inspired by JRR Tolkien's book and NOT by the movie. The author's sketchbook has the cart before the horse. It's as if the movie generated the sketches and NOT the JRR Tolkien LOR. The book material is of very good quality; glossy pages, beautiful artful compositions on every page with even a ribbon to mark your spot in the book though you could finish the book in an afternoon. The small sketchbook would make a good coffee table book for a small coffee table. The book publisher surely turned a profit on this book.
