Book Reviews of The Lord of the Rings Sketchbook

Book Review: Insight into the mind of a master artist
Summary: 5 Stars

In my opinion, Alan Lee is THE quintessential fantasy artist. His elegant and sophisticated sketches evoke a very tangible feeling of other-world-ness and one small drawing is enough to springboard the imagination toward far off places and amazing adventures.

Of course, Lee has been doing illustrations for The Lord of the Rings books for many years and he and fellow master, John Howe, were the driving forces behind the style of Peter Jackson's films. With this book, Lee provides a peek at some of his original sketches for the movies - he includes ideas that were fully realized on the screen as well as many that were eventually rejected. The wonder that is Middle-earth is brilliantly captured in his sketches and each page is densely packed with drawings. There is plenty to see and discover and dream about!

Book Review: Artwork Comparable to the masters
Summary: 5 Stars

Every time I see work by Alan Lee, it never fails to get an awe-inspiring reaction from me. His technique is just mesmerizing- very surreal. I love this book for the simple fact that it's by him. Besides showcasing great art, he also writes about his experience working with the legendary Lord of the Rings films, and how he was brought about working on the project from the early recruiting day to winning the Academy Award, everything in his own words so you get a glimpse of how the mind of such a compelling artist works. True, most of it is in black and white, but that's the way it should be. There are a few watercolor paintings, that are equally inspiring. Everything in here is great, and is especially beneficial to the aspiring artist.

Book Review: Very Beautiful Book
Summary: 5 Stars

Alan Lee is a wonderful man and a pencil genius.
What Alan achieved with his drawings is what Peter Jackson achieved with his movies.
I was extremely pleased with this book - although a little smaller than I thought but beautiful - the drawings are very well printed on the paper. The typesetting are gorgeous.
Marvellous forward by Sir Ian McKellen.
The intro pages with his drawing of Middle Eart are very beautiful. WONDERFUL WORK! If you are a Tolkien/Lee/Jackson fan or like very good drawings, I mean Very Good Drawings and Illustrations, please do not hesitate - This book is for you. Enjoy it as much as I do.

I really wish I could meet Alan one day...

Book Review: Wonderful Work of Art
Summary: 5 Stars

If you're looking for the film's information literally, this might not be what you want. But, if you're looking for a trip into the cretive process that brought Tolkiens masterpiece to life, you might like this one.
Alan Lee is a wonderful artist, his drawings are really impressive, and in this book he shows how he created his version of Tolkien's world, trying to be faithfull to the autor's ideas.
There's plenty of drawings and sketches from all parts of the story, and the text explains how and why they were developed to the movie's scenes.
I loved.

Book Review: Alan is a genius
Summary: 5 Stars

After going through every page of sketches in this book, it occurred to me that Peter Jackson essentially took Alan Lee's vision and made it into the great epic that Lord of the Rings turned out to be. Alan Lee's imagination is unbelievable. The details of his pencil sketches are amazing, highly complex and rich. If you buy this book make sure you spend some time looking at Alan's depiction of the town Bree on page 35...the detail is unbelievable. Great book for learning how to pencil sketch or just have on your coffee table to show to friends.
