Book Reviews of The Looking Glass WarsBook Review: A Dark Twist Summary: 5 Stars
It's kind of crazy that I myself have thought and even attempted writing a dark version of Alice in Wonderland. And then I start reading this book and it is a dark version! I guess that saves me writing then :)
I picked up The Looking Glass Wars at Books-A-Million in the bargain section. I figured, oh it's a hardback and it's only $4.97 so why not? Well, now I'm really glad that I got it for such a cheap price even though I would have paid full price for it anyway because I really fell in love with this book from the beginning. I'm going to list the Pros and Cons of this book but they by no means ruined the story for me when I read it. I still give this book 5 stars.
WARNING-MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!
CONS: General DoppelGanger. I didn't really feel like he was a good, wholesome character. It was hard to imagine what he looked like since it never described him. I kept thinking of an older cartoon guy instead of a human and I didn't know if he was younger or older. Also, a description of more of the characters would have been nice, like the knights and rooks and even Dodge too. It didn't really describe some of the characters' features that kept popping up and then leaving for a while. Another thing that kind of got to me was how fast that everything happened when Alyss got back to Wonderland. The maps in the front of the book makes it look like everything is miles and miles apart. It only takes Alyss, Dodge, Hatter, Bibwit, the General(s), and eventually Molly a few days it seems to travel past the volcanic plains to the Valley of Mushrooms and to the Chessboard Desert to Mount Isolation. It just seemed too rushed at the end, almost as if the author was trying to get the story done. But, it was still good and I'm looking forward to the sequel.
PROS: Very imaginative storyline and characters, along with the world of Wonderland. I like how Dodge and Alyss kind of felt feelings for each other when they were kids and were such great friends but when she came back there was some tension. I like that because they both changed during their 13 years apart. It's also the start of a predictable love story between them. The chapters were short and gave you a break from reading the same point of view after a while, which sometimes can get annoying and boring and since it jumps from view to view in this book you don't get bored. That's another thing that I liked. I liked that this story is a 'darker' version of Alice in Wonderland because I probably wouldn't like it if it wasn't. It's full of horror, sadness, and hatred and I really like that it's not all 'tea and kitties' if you get my meaning.
Well, as for this book, I truly adored it and am buying the sequel 'Seeing Redd' when I get the chance. I believe it's a good book for all ages and turns a twist on the original which I also adore. If you're a super serious fan of Lewis Caroll and don't like people taking things out of context then this book is probably not for you. But, try it if you're willing. This is a great book!
Summary of The Looking Glass WarsThe Myth: Alice was an ordinary girl who stepped through the looking glass and entered a fairy-tale world invented by Lewis Carroll in his famous storybook. The Truth: Wonderland is real. Alyss Heart is the heir to the throne, until her murderous aunt Redd steals the crown and kills Alyss? parents. To escape Redd, Alyss and her bodyguard, Hatter Madigan, must flee to our world through the Pool of Tears. But in the pool Alyss and Hatter are separated. Lost and alone in Victorian London, Alyss is befriended by an aspiring author to whom she tells the violent, heartbreaking story of her young life. Yet he gets the story all wrong. Hatter Madigan knows the truth only too well, and he is searching every corner of our world to find the lost princess and return her to Wonderland so she may battle Redd for her rightful place as the Queen of Hearts.
