Book Reviews of The Little Black Book of Style

Book Review: Quick and easy read for style lovers
Summary: 3 Stars

I know that being only 23 with a limited income living at home while trying to save money to pay for my wedding (at the time I read this book, anyway) makes the idea of wanting to reinvent my style seem a little lofty, considering the cost of clothes these days. However, after reading this book, I now know that it's not about the price or the label of your clothes - it's HOW you wear them. The only thing I didn't really like about the book was the tendency to have very wordy run-on sentences. I get that she was trying to be conversational...but in an advice book, I think short and sweet is the best policy. Although I must say I was pleasantly surprised to see all of the Rueben Toledo artwork in the book (he is PHENOMENAL!) as well as all the fabulous quotes! Makes for a quick and fun read :)

Book Review: A fun read but not a whole lot of helpful information.
Summary: 3 Stars

The book is well written and the illustrations are really beautiful. Who knew that Nina Garcia has such a wonderful sense of humor! The first part of the book is helpful in terms of providing information you can use and implement. The last half is just fluff. She highlights fashion icons and includes mini-interviews with designers. She tries to show you where to go for inspiration. That's fine, but I bought her book because I wanted to hear what SHE had to say. This book and Tim Gunn's book echo each other in terms of 'must haves' for every womens closet so if you've read his book, definitely skip this one. In fact, I think you can get more fashion tips just from looking at the stunning illustrations than by reading the text.

Book Review: The Little Black Book of Style
Summary: 3 Stars

A fun read, but not much to it. Repeated many of the same observations we've all read in women's magazines and not much about how to accomplish it yourself. Much, much better is Tim Gunn's Guide to Style. He really went into the "how to" of style, and he's funny as well. His method for cleaning out your closet is one of the best I've ever heard - I did it and got rid of over half of what I had hoarded for years. Then I went shopping!

Book Review: Just good.
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this along with Nina's other book, the one hundred, and while this one is good, I would recommend the one hundred way over this one. It's a nice read, and again filled with gorgeous illustrations, but I find that the other book is more useful for advice and a solid fashion foundation. The other one is also much longer.

Book Review: Lightweight read
Summary: 3 Stars

Easy to read, fast and fun book but not a whole lot of substance. Think that there could have been greater detail on style for the average woman. Believe that Nina Garcia has a great wealth of fashion information but you won't read nearly enough in this book.
