This book is astonishingly naive and nasty. It panders to the view that the USA is somehow being 'taken over' by Canada and Mexico. In fact, Mexico and Canada are the United States two largest trading partners, crucial sources of raw materials and important markets that anchor the US in relation to its wider position in the region. If the author has traveled to Mexico, for example, they might be aware that some 2600 US-based companies operation in Mexico. Wal-Mart is the biggest private employer in Mexico, Canada and the United States. The economic processes of integration, which were codified by NAFTA, but started long before, have been strengthened by NAFTA and are now producing the inevitable political, cultural and social 'problems'. But the 'terms' of integration have been and will continue to be set by Washington. This author should get out more. For all practical purposes Canada and Mexico are part of the U.S. and that simply enhances the U.S. economically and adds to what is already a divergent nation-state. The United States of North America is not be feared, but looked to with enthusiasm. For the record, I was born in rural British Columbia, just north of the U.S. border and have lived in or visited Mexico for over 30 years and currently work in the United States. I have no doubt the United States of North America will come into being in my life-time and will not, as this author fears threaten the US. On the contrary it will strengthen the U.S. and bring benefits to Americans and non-Americans alike.
