Book Reviews of The Last WishBook Review: Grim(m) Fairy Tales Summary: 5 Stars
I came by The Last Wish via The Witcher video game, and I am quite satisfied with both. As a European, Sapkowski seems not to have been tainted by the triteness and commercialism that has afflicted so much speculative fiction in the U.S. His writing is gritty and dark, like the original fairy tales on which it seems to be based. The protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, is a classic anti-hero--a warrior who has made himself into a monster in order to combat still greater monsters. His task is necessary yet thankless, and he approaches it with the attitude of a hardened mercenary--as just another job. I cannot express how refreshing that is in an era of Tolkien-clones and shallow D&D novelizations, in which every character has some Grand Destiny(TM) and good and evil regularly clash in Titanic Battles for the Fate of the World(TM).
Book Review: First book I bought since Elementary. Summary: 5 Stars
Now ever since elementary 7 years ago I never bought a book or bother to actually read any but after playing the game I decided I like the way the story goes and decided to get more out of it.
What I like about this book is how it discuss issues that most people don't even bother to even look at. I'm not so sure if it's just me or most of the book I've read (mostly for school) are way too shallow for me and are pretty much the same thing over and over. The Last Wish gives a different point of view in a way as to let the reader understand the situation and make the choices in the novel itself. I really enjoy every part of the story. There wasn't a second that made lose interest. This book is definitely one that must be owned by fantasy readers.
Book Review: The Last Wish Summary: 5 Stars
So this book was pretty hard to track down, mostly because the name was different than the game. I was happy when it finally arrived, a few days before I expected. I thought since it wasn't supposed to be released until the 5th of May? that it would probably take most of the month to get to me. But I was pleasantly surprised when it made it in time for my Boyfriend's birthday who was so very happy and is throughly satisfied with the book. Being a fan of the game and all. It is a little racy though, a good read. Maybe that will make some want to buy it more. :)
I recieved the book in the condition it was promised. Almost a full week before I expected and wrapped in gift wrap ... beautifully. I could not have asked for a better shipment.
Book Review: A very entertaining and refreshing take on fantasy Summary: 5 Stars
I learned of this book after hearing that the critically acclaimed The Witcher was based off this book.
Others have said it better, but I'd like to also echo their words: While other tales may use the tried & true formulas, this author gives a very gritty story humor and wit. You'll come to like Geralt, even if you might not want to meet him in person.
One thing I really got a kick out of were the references to classic children's tales - albeit it not in the manner you'd expect. ;)
In summary visit the publisher's site and read the excerpt they provided there. It will help give you an idea of what to expect.
Book Review: My only regret is that it's not a five book series... Summary: 5 Stars
I love the world created in these books (you want "The blood of Elves" also). But I'm hardly the only one.
Name another two book series that has inspired: A TV series, a movie, not only one but soon to be two video games and one heavy metal song/video from Vader (I think, it was Vader...I may be wrong on that one but it was a pretty good video). There may be a few others, but I can't think of them.
With all that going on, who cares what I have to say? (Didn't think so, I'll keep it short).
I'm dying for a third book (I've read the first two over and over) and I hope there will be an English version coming out soon.
