Book Reviews of The Last Season (P.S.)Book Review: Couldn't put it down Summary: 5 Stars
I read this book cover to cover in 2 days because I simply couldn't put it down! I love backpacking and hiking, but not as much as I do after reading this book. I almost took a blow-dryer up to the mountains to try to melt the snow faster so I could get on with the backpacking trip I had planned in Yosemite prior to reading the book. It left me guessing till the end. The imagery in the book really made me feel like I was in the mountains, and probably painted a more beautiful image in my mind than I would have experienced with my eyes. The passion that Randy had for the Sierra was wonderfully portrayed by the author. I recommend this book to anyone.
Book Review: Couldn't pull myself away Summary: 5 Stars
Eric Blehm crafted a tale rich in detail and sincerity with The Last Season. While Morgenson's life and his disappearance made for a great mystery ripe for any author to pick, Blehm's attention to the true main character-the high Sierras-gave the story a texture that would have otherwise been lacking. The layers of the story contantly unfolded to reveal a depth that gave the reader pause to contemplate the inherent conflicts. The enormity of the landscape crept up from the pages-it was like traveling through the park each night as I picked up the book. A great read for anyone who appreciates a well written, complicated story-especially the endings.
Book Review: Review-THE LAST SEASON Summary: 5 Stars
/This book was a well-researched, detailed account of one man's disappearance. During the course of reading it, the reader comes to understand the man's love of the wilderness, which is the driving force in his life, and the effect that love has on those who love him. It also paints a picture of the nooks and crannies as well as the grand vistas of this wilderness that he so loved. Along the way we get a glimpse into the everyday life of a park ranger, as well as learn the differences among rangers. It was a very compelling read and transported me into a whole new world.
Book Review: The Last Season Summary: 5 Stars
A winner! Eric Blehm captures the head and heart of Ranger Randy Morgenson, who devoted his entire adult worklife to backcountry rangering. It's as much in the telling of the tale as the tale itself that makes this a great read. It is the compelling "why" that drives this tale. Blehm gets into Morgenson's head in a way that perhaps, Morgenson could not get into his own head.
"The Last Season" is the saga of the often humdrum duties of a backcountry ranger, combined with a psychological study of Ranger Morgenson that makes this a compelling, memorable read.
Book Review: Fascinating Story, Fascinating Life Summary: 5 Stars
My neighbor, Al Blake (former USFS), brought the book over today... His wife, Reni, took pottery class with Judi Morgenson at Lassen College. Of course, Al met Randy, on the rare occasions that he blew into town. So, it is strange, how we are all connected, in this tiny blue world. And anyone who has worked in the wilderness (I worked for Los Padres N.F. at Pacific Valley Ranger Station), or backpacked, can relate to the many different emotions expressed in this book. Well written, and engrossing, this is a book that, literally, I couldn't put down. Five stars!
