Book Reviews of The Last Full Measure

Book Review: Very Affecting Novel on the last years of the Civil War in the East
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the novel that it seemed that Shaara came into his own. This part of the Civil War was incredibly brutal and Shaara depicts this well. The campaign that Grant and Lee waged was epic and Shaara brings out the humanity of these two men. This book seems just a notch below the "Killer Angels" and is superior in many respects to "Gods and Generals". It is populated by a very human Grant (this book made me want to read more about him) and a very ungodlike Robert E. Lee who propel the story. Chamberlain and his struggles are also depicted and are very relevant because his actions in the last year of the war were as heroic as his actions at Gettysburg. Appomattox is also depicted very movingly. Hopefully this novel will eventually be made into the definitive Civil War film.

Book Review: My Favorite Historic Novel
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Last Full Measure" was a wonderful Civil War novel with fantastic insights into the minds of the war's heroes and famous leaders. It is easily read and doesn't get dull or boring. I especially like when it tells of the everyday things that Grant and Lee did and their quirky habits. I also like to learn how certain battles fell to shambles and how the tree of communication fell apart and led to confusion. It is fascinating to hear how the leaders of the war thought how battles would end and how they really did end. It is captivating to know of leaders' thoughts and how their minds worked. Jeff Shaara wrote with amazing style to make the last few years of the Civil War interesting, compelling, and a learning experience for me.

Book Review: Amazing
Summary: 5 Stars

I have just completed reading this book, finishing the three: Gods and Generals, The Killer Angels and now this... the series is an amazing depiction of the men who fought for both the Conferate and the Union. I cannot remember the last time that I have so enjoyed a book to the point that I am now scanning the internet to find more books about the era. A great way to experience the most dramtic time of our history without being bogged down by the strategies - but seeing it from the human condition that these men fought and died in. Highly recommend not only this book, but all three as a wonderful introduction to the men who fought in the civil war, their own struggles and personal conflicts. You will not be able to put the book(s) down.

Book Review: SUPER HISTORY BOOK!!!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Last Full Measure" is THE best history book I have ever read. It captivated me from the beginning to end, each page more interesting than the next. I especially like how the author showed the inside view of the battle from the leaders standpoints. And how they planned their battles with such care and precision. It was fascinating to read about all these famous historical leaders and follow them on their path to defeat or victory. This book never got boring or dull, it is much better than other historical novels that I have read and am looking forward to reading more of Jeff Shaara's other novels. Jeff Shaara has made a truly compelling novel, which captures the Civil War's tragedy perfectly.

Book Review: Outstanding!
Summary: 5 Stars

Not only an entertaining read, this book brings home the horror of war. In places it will bring thoughtful and sensitive readers to tears as they consider the terrible sacrifices on both sides of this needless conflict in our history.
The Confederate States of America and the United States of America might have walked hand in hand and been stronger for it. In a few more years, with the advent of the Industrial Revolution, slavery would have died a natural death. By now the states would most likely be reunited. Certainly states would enjoy stronger states rights and the federal government would not be the all consuming power in our lives that it has become.
