I read this book several years ago, I must have been about 9 (although I have gone back to read it several times since). I bought it at a book fair, having seen a cute dog on the cover. I think, that at that age it was a little brutal for me, but nontheless a great read.
It starts by introducing the characters, and it's a bit tedious, but even some of the best books can have horrible beginings. The story soon begins with some mild scares when a sick dog attacks another. Once it gets started, however, it becomes a riveting read, but a bit harsh. It descirbes dogs being attacked, and diseased dogs going crazy. Even so, I still think that maybe it was even good because it makes everything in the book very real.
Different characters' points of views are shown with first hand accounts, and it never really says what was right, or good, just how they thought it happened. Every character has its flaws, some more than others, and there are no clear good or bad guys. They are all just people trying to live through a rough time.
I think the best part was definitely the end. It was so bittersweet and just... fitting. It really tied up the story so well. Some things may have been just a teensy bit obvious, but it still kept me on my toes with unexpected twists and turns. The whole thing really evoked my emotions well. It was also a definite tear jerker, the first of which I had ever read.

Logan Moore hates everyone. The father who abandoned him. The stepfather who wants to control him. Kids who get in his face. Everyone. Except Jack. A mangy mutt that nobody wants. Except Logan.
