Book Reviews of The Last ColonyBook Review: Exciting, and fun to read. Summary: 4 Stars
This last installment of the "Old Man's War" trilogy has John Perry retired and, along with his wife and daughter, responsible for "The Last Colony". The story develops nicely with twists and turns that keep you wondering what could possibly happen next, then it happens, and it all makes perfect sense. I found it exciting, fun to read, and difficult to put down. I've become a fan of Mr. Scalzi and can't wait for his next book.
Book Review: A Fitting Finish Summary: 4 Stars
A logical conclusion to the excellent trilogy. Some details glossed over to allow the further "Zoe's Tale". But a real accomplishment, to hold the reader's interest over the 3 books, at a high level of storytelling.
Book Review: Scalzi Books Summary: 4 Stars
Read all three books in the set, starting with "Old Man's War" - this is wonderful writing, and really fun science fiction.
Book Review: Another underwhelming sequel Summary: 3 Stars
"The Last Colony" was a little disappointing to me, which is pretty much how I felt about "The Ghost Brigades". Nice enough ideas, but sloppy execution, spotty writing, and terse dialogue bring it down. There's also a very large plot point that suddenly gets dropped off with no further mention or elaboration, quite odd. In spite of its shortcomings, it's still a fairly enjoyable read, just don't come in with high expectations (though the ending was pretty nice, and I don't mean that in a sarcastic way).
Anyway, I highly recommend "Old Man's War" (the first book in the series), it's quite excellent and is far superior to the sequels, I'll probably read it again someday. "The Ghost Brigades" and "The Last Colony" are pretty flat and feel like rush-jobs and simply aren't up to par with the original novel, but they aren't necessarily bad either and are a decent enough way to kill some time. I won't be reading "Zoe's Tale" so I can't comment on that, I'm just not interested in re-reading this same story from another point of view. For more discerning readers: Stick to "Old Man's War" and ignore the sequels. For everyone else: The sequels are worth a look if you just can't get enough of the series, just don't get your hopes up too much.
Book Review: Good - But leaves some plots hanging... Summary: 3 Stars
I have really enjoyed the Old Man's War series by John Scalzi. In this latest (and apparently last) installment, he includes all the political intrigue of earlier novels.
But some of the plots were really left hanging... the colony found a new race, the werewolves. You had high drama about them, and then they suddenly vanished from the plot... There is no mention of them in the last half of the book.
It felt to me like Mr. Scalzi set out to write one book, and suddenly changed his mind half way through and decided to write an entirely different book. Either book would have been a good read... but I feel I only got half of two separate stories.
