Book Reviews of The Lair of the White Worm: Complete, Original Text (Forgotten Books)Book Review: Lowly Lair Summary: 2 Stars
Easily my least favorite Stoker novel. The concept is a solid one: Adam Salton, newly arrived in rural England at the request of an uncle he's never known, meets his uncle's neighbors. Among those neighbors is a selfish, hypnotic land baron (also newly arrived to take up his inheritance), the baron's African slave (who seems to be particularly ugly and untrustworthy), two beautiful young women (one of whom Adam falls immediately in love with), a very Van Helsing-like friend of Adam's uncle (who just happens to be a history/mythology buff), and the mysterious Lady Arabella March (who may or may not be the titular White Worm, or dragon, taken human form). The machinations of the Land Baron, the Slave, and the White Worm should, in a well-written novel, keep Adam and his friends in a constant state of danger and the reader in a constant state of tension.
The execution of the idea, however, is lacking to a fault. None of the characters are really clearly developed. One can make the same argument about the cast of "Dracula," but at least in that novel the titular villain's motives remain consistent. In "White Worm," the three villains can't ever seem to decide whose side they are on or what they even really want. Case in point: if Lady Arabella wants to marry the land baron and take his title / money, why would she help him woo / hypnotize the young woman he's set his eyes on? I can understand pretending to help, but she goes beyond that for no discernable reason at all. And that's the problem with every move every main character makes -- there's no rhyme or reason. The plot meanders and falls apart, and there is little satisfaction in the climactic battle.
