Book Reviews of The Hunt for Red October (Jack Ryan)Book Review: Mom! Want to know what I do. Read "Hunt for Red October"! Summary: 5 Stars
When "Hunt for Red October" came out, my daughter was an AE in VP23, Maine..She tried to explain what an AE and a P3 were and why the US Navy was interested in Iceland but I did not understand until I read the book. I am very grateful to Tom Clancy for giving a non-technical mind a glimmer of what a complex system we have in place. I believe the Government was very concerned because Claney gave the correct info without asking their permission first. In my opinion he gave the average citizen in the US and probably in Russia the most clear understanding of what the true situtation was between our two countries and contributed to the early demise of the Cold War. I still find it awesome that for the last ten years, after reading each of his books, we see the some of the same incidents in the newspaper within months. Mr John Clark does exist. Scary.
Book Review: Cold War Drama Borught To A New Height Summary: 5 Stars
With believable characters and suspense that will keep the reader awake all night, The Hunt For Red October is one of Tom Clancy's best offerings ever.Using great cut and chase chaptering and writing just techincal enough to engross, but not to be overbearing, this thriller will take the reader through every emotion from fear to joy as they move through the pages. Whether you are a naval warfare aficiando or just looking for some excitement, this novel is sure to please. Out stripping the over-edited and over-acted motion picture by miles, this is a book for anyone. Clancy writes with fine attention to detail and created characters the reader will no only come to love or hate, but come to know as personally as their own family. I first read this book in 1992 and I still know the main character's names by heart. It is that moving. Read it today.
Book Review: Enthralling . . . Summary: 5 Stars
The Hunt for Red October is a great piece of military literature. It is full of suspense (unless you've seen the movie and know what will happen) and shocking detail. It's difficult to catch all of it if you try to go through it too fast. If you will just take your time and concentrate on it, it is exceptional. There are a few parts where the techincal detail gets a bit too involved, and it can get a bit boring, but just read through it and more action will arrive. It is a bit hard to understand since Tom Clancy tries to make sure that no one knows what is going on until it happens, hoping to build the suspense (and succeeding) but making it a bit tedious to keep reading and not know what's going on. I'd only recommend this to serious readers, because it is an intelligent book. If you just want the action, watch the movie.
Book Review: Clancy's freshman effort withstands the test of time Summary: 5 Stars
If you're new to the Jack Ryan books but you want to start reading the series, a good place to start is the book that launched Tom Clancy's career--The Hunt For Red October.By now you probably know what it's about, thanks to the magic of the movies. A Russian submarine captain tries to defect, and only Jack Ryan can guide him to safety. Tom Clancy keeps the readers on the edges of their seats for the entire length of his shortest novel. He creates gripping suspense, yet he can still tell a good story by depicting all sides in the book. We see things from the perspective of Jack Ryan, Capt. Marko Ramius, and even Tupolev, the captain of the Russian submarine in pursuit of Ramius. Although this book is 17 years old by now, it's still a great novel. If you're looking for an exciting military thriller, look no further.
Book Review: The greatest debut ever Summary: 5 Stars
Maybe some people will not like it, but this book is as good as they come!. It's plot is superbly and tightly woven; the characters seem like people you could find in the supermarket, yet they turn into extraordinary people when facing extraordinary challenges. Clancy makes this transition in a very smooth way. The events are concatenated in a highly logical way to get you to the final ending. About the only thing I can criticize is the somehow biased stance it takes in USA-USSR relations, but we have to remember that the book was written when the cold war was still something from the present.
Clancy is one of the best plotters I've ever read and his surrogate son (or friend?) John Patrick Ryan is a very believable character. If you like geopolitical intrigue, fast action and a very good plot, you should not miss this.
