Book Reviews of The Hunt for Red October (Jack Ryan)Book Review: My first Clancy book... the one that hooked me! Summary: 5 Stars
I read this book years ago while I was doing my A-Levels (pre-U), and this book was the one that made me a Clancy fan.
From then, I got all his Jack Ryan books until Executive Order.
While the others may have past their expiry date (do-not-read-again-onced-read), I still find reading Red October a joy once a while.
This techno thriller grips you with the intricate details of submarine & anti-submarine warfare. The writing style and flow makes it easy and interesting for the reader to follow.
The other feature that turns the pages is the conflict between a phd scholar, business savvy, ex-marine who clashes with the typical military sterotype. He being a reluctant, but it-had-to-be-done attitude, gives this hero a very honourable image. An image that one would want to relate to.
The first copy I bought of this book has long since gone... probably I had left it on a table or chair somewhere, but I still have my second copy until today. A good read.
Book Review: The lure that pulled in generations of readers! Summary: 5 Stars
After a very disappointing experience with Tom Clancy's latest effort, "The Bear and the Dragon," I went back to "The Hunt for Red October" and "Red Storm Rising" to remember why it was that I started reading Tom Clancy's books in the first place..."Red October" is Clancy's shortest book, but it's probably one of his best. The character development, layered story-telling, and attention to detail make it an extremely interesting read. I've read this book at least three times now, and I have enjoyed each reading as much as I did the first time through, nearly 15 years ago now. Come along and join in the action as an unlikely hero, Jack Ryan get swept up by international politics and situations. Definitely 5 stars. If you enjoy this book, there's a good chance that you'll also enjoy "Red Storm Rising," "Debt of Honor," and "Executive Decision." Those all take on action of global proportions! Good luck out there! Alan Holyoak
Book Review: Excellent! Read nothing like it! Summary: 5 Stars
If I were to have to read any book five times over this would be it. Clancy does a great job of getting the reader into the lives of the book's characters. I felt like I was the character he was explaining when I read his print. I have never read anything that can quite compare to Clancy's novel, "The Hunt For Red October"; it intrigues me to read more of his novels. Another thing that I enjoyed was the way Clancy's words weren't words at all, it was like I was watching a movie (I've never seen the movie). This book was not like a novel, it was more like a film. The only thing that I found to be wrong with this book was the way it dragged on a little too long. The book's length is fine, although Clancy did go a little overboard on details. He would have two characters in the middle of a conversation and Clancy would interrupt them with some unnecessary comment. Other than that small drawback I believe that the novel in all was gripping with its flowing words.
Book Review: quite suspensful Summary: 5 Stars
Taking place in the early 1980's at the height of the cold war, Marko Rmaius in charge of A missle Submarine Called Red October has been built with a new drive system that makes her near impossible to detect. Ultimately, Red October could sneak up to within 90 miles of the United States and launch over 200 nuclear warheads on Washington D.C. and New York City. This causes some concern so, Jack Ryan, living in England for the last year, goes over to the CIA to pay Admiral Greer a visit and along the way learns that Marko Ramius is trying to defect to the United States. The Americans want that sub, and the soviet fleet wants the sub destroyed. What happens then is a chess game between the two sides. Will the Russians find her and sink the sub? Will the Americans get their hands on it? Read the book and find out! If you have seen the movie you know how it turns out. The movie was good, but the book is ALOT better. Action, Drama, and Suspense! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!
Book Review: Keeps you on edge till the very end. Summary: 5 Stars
Two nations, the United States and the Soviet Union, compete to find a rogue missle submarine. In 1988, Captain Ramius, a Soviet captain in command of the most technologically advanced Russian missle sub, disappears into the Atlantic. The United States President hires Jack Ryan to claim it for the United States, while the Russians try to blow it up. All this counts down to the final conflict. The book is overall a fairly good book, but some parts are unrealistic strategically; for example, the Russians pile all their military boats into one sea, leaving Russia one big target. The United States does the same thing. This ,however, is the only complaint. Otherwise, the author, Tom Clancy, does a great job translating the nautical terms fot those who haven't heard them. Overall, the book is very, very good and fun to read. It raises a lot of questions that are fun to think about and makes you wonder how the military works. This book is excellant.
