Book Reviews of The Hour I First Believed: A NovelBook Review: Best book of the decade Summary: 5 Stars
I used to wonder why Wally Lamb's books were spaced so far apart. Now I know. Genius takes more than a year or two to be accomplished.
How could anyone find this book tedious? Every single page is a masterpiece. Every character, from the main protagonists down to the one-paragraph "extras," is carefully crafted and brilliantly presented. Mr. Lamb knows how to grab a reader and keep his/her attention for more than 700 pages. I just wish he would do it a bit more often!
If I could give this book ten stars, I would gladly do so. Keep it up, Mr. Lamb!
Book Review: Amazing! Summary: 5 Stars
The fact that so many of the negative reviews essentially whine, "well, it was good, but it was too long and complicated..." should suggest to any capable reader that they can pitch those reviews into the trash as irrelevant. Yes, the book is over 700 pages. Yes, there is a lot of detail, information, and several plot lines to follow. And yes, if you are a discerning and capable reader, YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK! It's phenonmenal, and it's a sad statement on our literary capacity as a whole that a book this amazing is disregarded by so many as basically "too difficult."
Book Review: Loved every minute of it! Summary: 5 Stars
It was an honor and a privilege to read this novel. Wally Lamb is my favorite author and I have waited and waited with anxious anticipation for this novel. Let me say, it was well worth the wait.
This tale in some ways mimics- I Know This Much Is True - in that there is a multilayered tapestry woven together to form a diverse, interesting, and powerful storyline. You find yourself ensconced in the ancestry and history of many characters, not just the main character. I loved it! The book is a fabulous read - I simply couldn't put it down.
Book Review: If it wasn't for the available comments of others, I would've missed this one. Summary: 5 Stars
I was looking for my next read by browsing through Amazon.com books when I ran into "The Hour I First Believed" by Wally Lamb. Wow. I really appreciate being able to read other reader's opinions before I purchase, because sometimes the jacket cover just isn't enough. Wally Lamb is an excellent writer. When the very thick book arrived I was a little afraid it was too much. But due to the writer's ability to help you read efficiently and see it in your minds eye, I whizzed through this one. What a human interest story.
Book Review: Wonderful writing Summary: 5 Stars
I picked this up at the library, sorry Amazon, and enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Of course the main story is about the Columbine tragedy but could apply to anyone who has been a victim of crime and suffered prolonged effects from it. The book takes us into the minds of both the victim and the family as they try to deal with it. A duel plot explores the main character's family and heritage as he attempts to make sense of everything that has happened to him both in the past and present. Wonderfully written.
