Book Reviews of The Hour I First Believed: A Novel

Book Review: The Minute I Started Reading...
Summary: 5 Stars

Like every other Wally Lamb book, I was emotionally drained after reading this new novel. I both love and hate that about his writing, but a secret truth is, that's exactly why I always come back from more. From the minute I started reading, I was hooked. The different story lines, the different time frames, the wealth of emotions that this will bring out of you, I loved it all. His writing speaks to so many people, on so many levels and it's always compelling. I started reading his work years ago and I find I always read his books with the same nail biting, anxiety riddled page turning, no matter how many times I've read the story. Love the new book, love the old ones, write more...please!

Book Review: A tedious, disappointing read that lacked logic
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a fan of Mr. Lamb's first book, but this was not a winner, rather 700+ pages of meandering concepts with characters who cannot be believed. I read the entire length of the novel hoping to find some redeeming value, but at the end was left with a quasi-spiritual flop undeserving of the hours I lost and should have spent on chores around our home. I found the one-sided political jabs annoying and repetative. The protagonist is a black hole into which human decency seems to have been swallowed, and to have been led to sympathize with some of the most morally depraved individuals(Lolly and Velvet) was disturbing at best. On the bright side, this book was lent to me, and I didn't waste $20...

Book Review: Honest, heartbreaking and hopeful
Summary: 5 Stars

This was my first time reading Wally Lamb's work and I thoroughly enjoyed every page! I was expecting a book that focused on the tragedy of Columbine and the repercussions of such a horrific event. While it starts off that way the book expands and deals with so much more, a crumbling marriage, family secrets, infidelity, and a man's journey to find himself when all seems lost. Wally Lamb has a talent for exploring the darker side of a person's mind, and one's battle to find hope in the face of despair. I would recommend this to someone who is looking for a book that will pull at their heart strings and leave them with a greater understanding of the resiliency of the human spirit.

Book Review: the power of kindness
Summary: 5 Stars

For the first several pages, this seemed dry....but Lamb shone through. He breaks the human condition down into pertinent questions, "Who is my brother?" "To whom are we responsible?" "How does one life affect another?" "Is it possible to change another person's life by love and kindness?" He often refers to recovery/institutional programs who insist that you can't change another person, only yourself..."If I'm not the problem, there is no solution"....but could we "overextend" ouselves so much that we might hold a stanger's hand who is frightened? Talk to a parent about a child who has threatened violence? No, probably not...it's none of opur business. OR IS IT?

Book Review: Lamb Didn't Let Me Down
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a bit hesitant to read this book because of some of the negative reviews other people have given it. But I'm glad I trusted my gut instinct and relied on my past experiences with Lamb's novels...I really enjoyed this book! I found myself reading late into the night and early into the morning, not being able to put it down. Although at some points the multiple story lines and flashbacks to different times and characters seemed to go a little overboard, Lamb did a wonderful job of brining it all together to give us the bigger picture. PLEASE Mr. Lamb, don't keep us waiting so long next time!!
