Book Reviews of The Hour I First Believed: A NovelBook Review: Impressed Summary: 5 Stars
"The Hour I First Believed" is a great book. Mr Lamb surely knows how to lay the story line down & keep you entwined for many bends
and dips to come. He has the ability to really entrance you into his writing style & capabilities. This book takes on many controversial
topics but Mr Lamb has thoroughly researched all of his topics to deatiled specifics.
It pains me to know that Mr Lamb wrote this book over a span of nine years; will I have to wait that many more for another!? I have really anjoyed all of Mr Lamb's books; his writing is progressively getting better & better. Many people compare this piece to "She's Come Undone", but I would say that this book far surpasses the writing in "She's Come Undone".
Book Review: Complex, multi-layered masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
Several reviewers on here who were evidently hoping for a more simple and approachable story (perhaps like She's Come Undone, which, although a great book, didn't have the complexities of this one or I Know This Much is True). I LOVED this book, especially for all of its intricacies and interwoven plot lines with wonderful thematic parallels and rich allegory. I'm usually a very slow reader, but made it through this book in a week. The characters are complex, with many imperfections. The writing is very emotional, and I cried in quite a few places. It was incredibly satisfying to see how well everything ultimately tied together. It was also nice to see the re-appearance of Dr. Patel (from I Know This Much is True)!
Book Review: Wally Lamb Does It Again Summary: 5 Stars
Wally Lamb in three for three! THE HOUR I FIRST BELIEVED is a truly satisfying read. Like I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE, there are plots and subplots and hidden histories to be explored. It started off a little slow for me, but eventually I was totally engrossed with Caelum Quirk's life and family. Lamb has an ability to make you sympathize and actually LIKE characters that come off as sort of everyday a*sholes.
Upon finishing this book I sighed with regret that it was over and also with satisfaction for this truly great book. You can tell that Lamb puts a lot of time and hard work into his books (9 years!) and doesn't just toss them off to a publisher for a quick paycheck. A great book, a great author!
Book Review: Well worth the time Summary: 5 Stars
The title of this book intrigued me, as well as knowing what a great writer Lamb is. I wasn't disappointed. This novel covers so much ground so well - and usually when current fiction turns "historical at times" I lose intetest but not so with this book. Every few chapters the author writes a few lines that are so compelling you realize why you are sitting down with a 700+page book in your lap when there are so many other things to be done. The characters are believably imperfect and I would love to see this wonderful maze of a book made into a movie. It will never be as good as the novel, but could be amazing. My heart goes out to the victims of Columbine, both living and in heaven. May you find peace.
Book Review: A brilliant novel Summary: 5 Stars
I just finished this brilliant novel. Bravo to Mr. Lamb! This is a beautifully written epic with many threads that tie together seamlessly at the end. Mr. Lamb has said it took him 10 years to write this book. It is evident that a lot of love and sweat has been poured into the telling of this story.
The road you travel with Caelum Quirk is long and often heart-rending. Even though this novel deals with many serious issues, there is a definite feeling of hopefulness at the end.
I especially loved the fascinating journey of finding out the stories of Caelum's ancestors.
Of Mr. Lamb's three works of fiction, this is definitely my favorite! Highly recommended!
