Book Reviews of The Highlander's Touch (Highlander, Book 3)Book Review: Terrific story. 4 3/4 STARS (I would have preferred a slightly different ending.) Summary: 5 Stars
Life couldn't get worse for Lisa Stone. Her father died in a car accident 5 years ago. Having no insurance, he left Lisa and her mother in dept with medical bills. Now, her mom has cancer which will take her life within the next few months. Lisa has spent the past 5 years working two jobs to support herself and her mom, leaving no time for social or romantic relationships. One of her jobs is working as a cleaning lady for a local museum. She enters the museum late at night to clean the floors and dust the artifacts.
Exhausted, Lisa sits down in the museum manager's office to take a quick break. Within minutes, she falls asleep. By the time she wakes, it is morning and the manager is entering the office. Lisa dives under the desk to hide. She watches as the manager looks over a new artifact. It is a silver flask, tucked safely in a wooden chest. Unknown to Lisa or the manager, this flask carries a curse. Whomever finds it and touches it will be sent to the owner to return the flask to him. The manager carefully handles the flask with a set of tongs. When he leaves the office, Lisa can't help but take a look at it. However, she lifts the flask into her hand. She is swept back in time. 700 years in the past, deep in the heart of Scotland.
Circenn Brodie is a fierce knight. To Lisa, he appears to be a near giant in size. To Circenn, Lisa is a mystery. What kind of woman would walk around in such revealing clothing? (Tight jeans and a t- shirt) While questioning her, he realizes that his curse didn't just move a person from the place where the flask was found, it moved her through time. He has no way to send her back.
Circenn has closed himself off from all forms of attachment. Pets, friends, family, and wives all died eventually. He, however, will never die. The "blackest fairy", Adam Black, made Circenn immortal hundreds of years ago. Through time, he has had to watch people he cared for age and die. He refuses to repeat that torment for himself. Adam has tried for years to convince Circenn to embrace the powers that he gifted Circenn with. Circenn believes the gifts are wrong, and refuses them. Even refusing to make the people he cared for immortal. He doesn't wish his fate upon others.
Adam has a reputation for breaking the laws of the Fae. He loves to seduce human women and pull naughty pranks on the human world. However, his intentions for Circenn are different. He has a plan for the perfect knight. He has created Circenn with a perfect physical form and powers that the knight doesn't begin to understand. Adam will scheme and prank to build a relationship between Lisa and Circenn. There is a true bond between the blackest fairy and the immortal knight. Only the two of them know of it's origin. Adam will move space and time to see Circenn happy.
Circenn's resolve is weakening. As he falls in love with Lisa, he begins to use his gifts more and more to make her happy. He evens begins to consider making her immortal so that he can keep her forever. However, when he is called to battle by his Scottish king, Lisa is visited by the Fae queen. Circenn experiences a deep painful sense of loss in soul. He knows Lisa has been taken from him. Now he will move space and time to get her back. He'll follow Adam's teachings to retrieve her. When he gets her back, he'll offer to fulfill her every desire if she'll agree to stay with him forever.
I liked this story, but was a little disappointed with the ending. While the rest of the story was intense and emotional, the ending was too "happily ever after." Suggesting taking Lisa's parents back and forth in time with them was too much. It draws the real world into the Fae world with too much disregard for how secretive the Fae world is supposed to be. Why not just include everyone Lisa knows? How could they be certain the parents wouldn't tell others? I would have preferred to see Circenn and Lisa live in the romantic fourteenth century Scottish setting, while visiting her parents now and then in the future, without revealing that they were traveling through time. When a story is sewn up too prettily, it leaves me feeling empty about the outcome... "Who cares?" If there is a little bit of sadness and the end (Lisa would have to miss her parents a little between visits), it feels more realistic which tends to keep me connected to the characters.
Overall, a great read. I had trouble putting it down. I liked Circenn's character... intense, emotional, fierce, passionate, and devoted to his lady's happiness and safety. I enjoyed Moning's signature humor throughout the story as well. (Circenn mistaking tampons for gun- cleaning swabs.)
"Kiss of the Highlander" and "The Dark Highlander" are still my favorites. Men don't get sexier than the MacKeltar twins.
Summary of The Highlander's Touch (Highlander, Book 3)A Warrior Of Immortal Powers
He was a mighty Scottish warrior who lived in a world bound by ancient laws and timeless magic. But no immortal powers could prepare the laird of Castle Brodie for the lovely accursed lass who stood before him. A terrible trick of fate had sent her 700 years back in time and into his private chamber to tempt him with her beauty?and seduce him with a desire he could never fulfill. For this woman he burned to possess was also the woman he had foresworn to destroy.
A Woman Caught In The Mists Of Time
When Lisa felt the earth move under her feet, the fiercely independent 21st-century woman never dreamed she was falling...into another century. But the powerful, naked warrior who stood glaring down at her was only too real...and too dangerously arousing. Irresistibly handsome he might be, but Lisa had no intention of remaining in this savage land torn by treachery and war. How could she know that her seductive captor had other plans for her...plans that would save her from a tragic fate? Or that this man who had long ago forsaken love would defy time itself to claim her for his own....
