Book Reviews of The Gun Digest Book of Combat HandgunneryBook Review: Good Book Summary: 4 Stars
It is a good book for the beginner to intermediate student of pistol craft. I expected something a little more advanced due to the author's stellar reputation and body of work. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a novice looking for a through introduction into self-defense topics and combat shooting.
Book Review: A worthwhile read Summary: 4 Stars
This book was a little more tedious to read than Ayoob's "Concealed Carry" book but had lots of useful information on close quarter combat situations. I especially liked the reviews of very recent model semi-auto handguns.
Book Review: Very good reference... Summary: 4 Stars
A bit dated but still a good reference source. I refer to it often.
Book Review: 5th Edition Misleading Summary: 3 Stars
I was very disappointed when I received my 6th edition of Combat Handgunnery. I own the 5th edition, also by Ayoob, and loved it. I incorrectly assumed that the 6th edition would be updated, but as far as I can tell, it is simply a reprinting of the 5th edition. The chapters and text appear to be identical. I could not tell this from the descriptions or reviews that I read on Amazon. It is a great book, but don't buy it if you expect it to be different from the 5th edition.
Book Review: 6th Edition is a reprint of the 2002 5th Edition Summary: 2 Stars
Save your money. The 6th Edition is exactly the same book as the 5th Edition published in 2002, except for the cover. You can buy the 5th Edition (used) on this website for as low as $1.67. Gun Digest should have pointed this out when they published the 6th Edition. I am surprised that such a distinguished publisher would resort to this tactic to make a few more bucks.
