Book Review: Review from Books That Heal Kids

A punch, a kick, a pull, a shove, a pinch.....oh yep, those things happen between kiddos at my school from time to time. There's lots of developmental (and environmental) reasons this goes down. I won't bore you with them. My job as the school counselor is to help kids with social growth and surprise surprise....they can get mad and angry during the school day! I've been reading this story for quite a few years. It's very loved among kids because of it's cool setup with varying page sizes and illustrations. But The Grouchy Ladybug has also been a powerful tool for teaching anger management to my K-2 students. Cuz just about every page she is trying to scrap with someone - "Hey you! Wanna fight!!?" Perfect for teaching replacement behaviors. I love hearing the students try and figure out what's under her anger. They try and relate to her! Another thing that gets this story rockin' is my ladybug puppets (I'm borderline obsessed with puppets...it could be another blog in itself). I have two ladybug puppets the kids use to practice how to handle your anger and solve problems. You can do a lot with this story in the area of social skills.

This book tells the story of a grouchy ladybug who didn't want to share the juicy aphids that he found on a leaf with anyone else. He decides to fight over the aphids with another ladybug, but then determines that she is too small, so he goes off in search of a more worthy opponent. As each hour passes, he encounters another creature, larger and more fearsome than the last, and he dismisses each one in turn until, tired and hungry, he ends up back at the leaf again to share the last of the aphids with the friendly ladybug. The book is not very scary, and animal lovers will get a kick out of it, since it includes so many different creatures. There is a focus on simple time telling in the book. The book contains about 800 words.Book Review: Good book for the age group.

I really liked this children's book. The illustrations were very peculiar and different, as was the organization of the book. The pages going from smaller to bigger in the middle and the words on the pages also changing in size, getting progressively larger is definitely a different touch. I especially liked how the shape of the whale's tail was a page in itself towards the end. There was also a clock on each page reinforcing the time mentioned and the concept of it. All around this is a great book. It brings unusal animals, not thought about everyday to mind, which could potentially lead to questions and curiosity about them. I really think this a great book for the age group it is meant for (ages 3-7).Book Review: Excellent

I love this book, Some critics say this book teaches children to fight and be grouchy for no reason, but it does have a good moral to it. Reading is for entertainment, not to live by. Eric Carle is trying to build that interest to read and this book does a good job of it. Also, coming from a teacher, this is a good book to read when introducing time, and there are several activities you can find online to go along with it.Book Review: Great Little Book

I got this book for some friends who have a year and a half year-old daughter. thumbing through it, even I enjoyed it. The hardcover version has great colors, pages are different sizes and kids get to learn how to tell time and kids begin to learn an important lesson.
