Book Reviews of The Grouchy LadybugBook Review: Wonderful story! Summary: 5 Stars
What a terrific story for a child of any age! I purchased this book because of its wonderful illustrations. I read it to my young (under a year) son almost every day, and he remains mesmerized by the pictures on each page. The story itself is wonderful. It is as much about manners and the power of a positive attitude as it is about picking on someone your own size! I also love that the book takes the grouchy ladybug through her day hour by hour with illustrated clocks to help children learn to tell time. My sister teaches 1st grade, and her students love this book as well. I think it is one of Carle's better books, and I highly recommend it.
Book Review: Great Book Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great book. The plot I think behind the story is this. A lady bug doesn't get his way and wants to hurt another lady bug. The lady bug basically tells him to bug off. He leaves and finds another animal to fight and gradually the animals get bigger. It shows how foolish it is to pick fights because we will meet our match in the end. Also shows it is good not to be a show off or act all tough. Good book to read to kids who are or who act like bullies. My only two gripe sare that the clocks are too small to read. The clocks should be larger. Further the whale's tip easily breaks.
Book Review: Folks are missing the humor Summary: 5 Stars
Many of the reviewers have complained about the book/character being violent. On the contrary, the grouchy lady bug never actually fights anyone, and in fact always has an excuse as to why it can't fight at that moment. That's the joke. After a couple of confrontations, you realize the lady bug is going to back out everytime...and it's funny! Not to mention the oddity of a cute little lady bug being "grouchy" in the first place!
Lighten up folks. It's a story book. Not everything has to contain a "lesson". Some things can just be funny.
Book Review: Learning on more than one level. Summary: 5 Stars
Not only have both my kids enjoyed reading this book over and over again, but I think it is a very interesting book.
It allows parents to talk with their kids about right and wrong behavior, about cooperation and conflict, about standing up against bullies. Also, depending on the age of your child, you can teach basic time telling, increasing sizes, the cycle of day to night (from nighttime, to sunrise, to sun overhead at noon, etc.) A very unique book which fosters discussion between parents and kids.
Book Review: Grouchiness Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this book. I really enjoy books my Eric Carle. He does a great job with them. The pictures aren't like any other. They look more like something a kid has drawn. The imagination is wild. Most kids like talking animals or insects, not actual people. I think this book also teaches kids not to be so grumpy or rude, because it doesn't make your day better. In the end all is well when your nice to others. This book is a wonderful tool for kids as well as an enjoyment.
