Book Reviews of The Grouchy LadybugBook Review: What a darling book! Summary: 5 Stars
I read it for the first time to my twin sons tonight and was amazed at the colorful pictures, the storyline and the way the author counted time for the young readers. It is a moral book ~~ that teaches kids to be more grateful and to say please and thank yous. It also points out other people's kindnesses as well as their flaws. It's about a braggart lady bug, who was told to go off and bully someone else. There is a series of characters that the lady bug meets and turns out to be bigger than she is. It's colorful, certain to grab the child's attention and gives a nice moral to the story as well. It's not boring for the parent to read ~~ I am sure I'll be reading this one constantly over the next five years. It also gives the child perspective on nature ~~ like the beetle's claws, the yellow jacket's stinger and lobster's claws. Those are just among the few descriptions the author has thrown in there! Enjoy this book ~~ it's a keeper! 7-25-03
Book Review: There is a great lesson here! Summary: 5 Stars
I love Eric Carle! His illustrations are wonderful and there is always a math or science lesson included in the text. This one helps children learn to tell time and explains how ladybugs are helpful to plants. I was shocked when I read some of the reviews that criticized this book. I am the mother of five and I know that you can't protect them forever. Don't get upset about the behavior of the ladybug; use it as an example. Your children WILL encounter bullies like this ladybug. Explain this to them along with how you think they should handle the situation. It is also an example of how you do NOT want your own children to behave, even if they might be feeling grouchy. We all have bad days, but being mean to others is not the way to handle those days. In the end, the ladybug also realizes this. In my opinion, allowing them to enjoy this book will help your children, not hurt them.
Book Review: So Silly, So Fun!! Summary: 5 Stars
We have been picking up Eric Carle books to help with our four year old daughter's PDD and speech challenges. The repetitive sentence structure is really a delight for her as she gets to read the parts that are the same from page to page, yet each page features a different animal which keeps this book from feeling monotonous. The story is sweet in the end and funny throughout as the grouchy lady bug picks fights and backs out of each one. The tiered pages through the main part of the book are fun, displaying both a clock to represent the time and text that goes from small to large, emphasizing the growing size of the creatures the ladybug decides to pick fights with. If you're looking for cute story with reinforcers to proper sentence structure, introduction to time, and timeless art, this is a great book to get!
Book Review: Excellent read-aloud Summary: 5 Stars
In this picture book are many animals and patterns, the latter of which is appropriate for math concepts. A grouchy ladybug encounters a friendly ladybug eating aphids on a leaf and wants them all to herself. She challenges the other ladybug who accepts the challenge-to the grouchy ladybug's surprise. The grouchy ladybug then flies on and meets increasingly larger animals, challenging them all to a fight, and all accepting her challenge. She finally meets a whale who slaps her with his fin until she finds herself right back where she started from, meekly accepting the aphids that were left on the leaf by the friendly ladybug. The grouchy ladybug is contrite, realizing friendliness yields the peaceful life.
Book Review: The Grouchy Ladybug is a great children's book Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this book! I have read many Eric Carle books, and they all have great artwork and insightful issues that children deal with every day. The Grouchy Ladybug is no different. The circular story shows that many times you end up back where you started, especially if you're negative and uncaring. It also shows our children that bullying and violence will get you nowhere and that politeness, caring and sharing are the way to get what you want out of life. The repetition is great for children learning word patterns and makes it easier to follow for younger children. Eric Carle uses subtlety and creativity to deal with children's issues in a fun, colorful and intersting way.
