The introduction focuses on the discovery and settlement of the reef, explaining what comprises the reef itself, and describing the rich diversity of landscapes and resorts in and around the reef, as well as exploring the coastal fringe and providing useful information for would-be holiday makers. The book splits the reef into five sections, starting from the north and working down to the south.
