Book Reviews of The Good Thief

Book Review: BELIEVE the hype.
Summary: 5 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have been waiting for this amazing One Story editor and author's newest book since I heard it was being released. Published to rave reviews and for good reason, The Good Thief is a book that you won't soon regret.

I loved the amazing, Dickensian tone that contemporary authors don't tackle as much, sympathetically drawn characters and compelling narrative. This book is haunting and I found myself lying awake at night picking it back up because I needed to know what happened next, leading to a few bleary-eyed days at work! Because the plot has been detailed so much already I won't go into that but PLEASE do yourself a favor and read this. And then if you haven't already, read Animal Crackers.

Hannah Tinti is a FORCE and a writer to be watched and grateful for!!!

Book Review: Great Adventure into Historic New England
Summary: 5 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Hannah Tinti delivers the tale of Ren, an eleven year old boy from St. Anthony's orphanage in the "The Good Thief". Tinti takes the reader on an adventure into historical New England, all revealed through the eyes of Ren, while the story unfolds with mysterious acquaintances and unexpected dangers.

The story is full of rich characters and their stories kept my interest throughout as the mystery unraveled. The author's simple prose lends to the authenticity and credibility of the young innocent narrator. This writing style would probably appeal to the young adult reader as well, but I would be hesitant to pigeon-hole this story toward only that particular demographic. "The Good Thief" is an engrossing adventure that I would recommend to anyone of any age.

Book Review: a pleasantly literate late summer beach read
Summary: 5 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Author Tinti has not written THE Great American Novel (although the present work hints at the possibility); she has written a solid first novel and certainly one of the best of this summer's take-to-the-beach books. Indeed, in this time of "staycations," THE GOOD THIEF serves well to push nasty social and economic realities into the background for at least a bit. The plot is quick-paced with strong, but not obsessively maudlin attention to historical detail. There's a vibrant and appealing sense of time and place, but best of all, there's the lovingly taciturn and demurely solecistic characters, Ren and Benjamin. There are some wonderful resonances with Huck Finn, Oliver Twist, and David Balfour, but these characters are uniquely and loveably individual.

Book Review: a good story
Summary: 5 Stars

How do you tell a story? First sentence: "The man arrived after morning prayers." In this first paragraph, we are there with the man, his horse, and the boys. "The man waited, and the boys watched..." The second paragraph drops back to explain: "Men often came for children." There were some boys more likely to be chosen. There were others more likely to be passed over. "Ren was one of them." The third paragraph continues: "He had no memory of a beginning..."

If you want to read a good story, The Good Thief, by Hannah Tinti, is the book for you. It is a solid, old-fashioned story-as in, something happens and then something else and then something else. On December 1, it won the 2008 John Sargent, Sr. First Novel Prize.

In a New York Times review, The Good Thief was described as "an American Dickensian tale with touches of Harry Potterish whimsy, along with a macabre streak of spooky New England history."

I couldn't put it down.

Book Review: Real and Mystical...
Summary: 5 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
An Orphanage, Body Thieves, a "Mouse Trap" King Pin, a dwarf, a man who won't stay dead and a boy with one hand who can't stop stealing!

"The Good Thief" feels every bit like a work of fantasy but it is a very real tale set in (as Dickens would say)the worst of times. Life for the orphaned Ren is hard - he dreams of family and you know the warning...be careful what you wish for....

Hannah Tinti weaves stories throughout this book - as Benjamin Nab talking and coning his way through life - as the orphans who want to believe and...as the brother who wants an end to the story.

This book definitely makes me want to read her first book "Animal Crackers".
