Book Reviews of The God DelusionBook Review: Looking forward to Dawkins' next book Summary: 1 StarsI hope that, in his next book, Dawkins takes on Islam with the same fervor that he uses to attack Christianity. We ought to see some action then, eh!
Book Review: Bully Pulpit Not a Bully Brit Summary: 5 StarsIt comes down to probabilities. Based upon the evidence Mr. Dawkins has reviewed, he has concluded that God doesn't exist. The book is his explanation as to why he came to his conclusions. The man is a scientist and has spent his life questioning the world around him. Blowing a blood vessel because Mr. Dawkins dares to address the issue of God's existence highlights a religious individual's insecurity about their own beliefs. Lighten up people. The book is fun, informative and worth reading just for the sake of understanding that atheism isn't some big bugaboo. Speaking as an agnostic, read it and judge for yourself. I enjoyed it very much.
Book Review: like Yosemite Park,..spectacular, breathtaking, mind changing Summary: 5 StarsI'd like to personally thank this author for making a sea-change in my way of seeing! I haven't felt so permanently uplifted, so privileged to be human, since I read Kerouac's "On the Road" a couple decades ago.
I started this book with utter contempt,.."all right, I'll see what this jerk's beef is with God,..and then I'll quit after the first couple chapters, and have a good gloating laugh." I started feeling the poison and it hurt and I hated it, and I felt "guilty" for continuing, but it was too compelling to stop, after awhile I was manic for more of the cyanide, and then I was crying at all the beauty and clarity I had missed, and how much of my life I've wasted just being scared of God,..because of my upbringing in the Church. Heck, now I am not sure I ever believed in any of it,..I don't think I did, I just thought I was supposed to. I was even sending my own kids to Church on Sat and Sunday, out of some grim obligation to familial expectations. THAT 10,000 YEAR OLD FAMILY TRADITION ENDED LAST WEEK. Thank you Mr. Dawkins,..thanks for being just the friggin Jerk I needed, and wrenching me and my kids out of the religion that had made my first 4 decades of life one giant shot of mental Novocaine. Obviously this is not really a "kid's review" but I would get excommunicated by my "in group" if I put my actual name to this "Confession"
Book Review: Flawed and Judgemental Summary: 2 StarsOverall, the book was decent, but a couple huge points that really knock it down. First, the author clearly has an ax to grind with Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. The book could be re-titled "Why I dislike Theistic Religions originating in the Middle East." Second, he dodges a huge philosophical angle. Assume God does not want to be proven. He/She has the power to prevent His/Her creations from 'proving' His/Her existence. The theory is that God wants His/Her creations to worship Him/Her of their own free will. If you could prove God, there wouldn't be a decision to make. Everyone would worship God as their creator. Some would call that belief in God, 'faith.' Therefore, a 'proof' can never happen. Ultimately, Atheism is 'fanatical' because it is based on faith because the central hypothesis cannot be proved.
Book Review: The GOD Delusion Summary: 1 StarsWhat a disappointment. I was expecting a serious argument that would challenge belief in God. The book is full of sarcasm, patronizing conjecture, anecdotal reports and straw man agruments. I was expecting more from a man of science. These are the same arguments that he accuses his debunkers of using.
I don't know if Thomas Jefferson was an atheist or not. Why are his beliefs significant to the argument? There may be high churchmen who hold their own faith in contempt, but who are they? Not one name is named. If the book of Judas is not part of the christian cannon, why was is quoted as if it were?
The whole book is full of sloppy arguments. It is not worth purchasing.
