Book Reviews of The God Delusion

Book Review: Ratio Illusion
Summary: 1 Stars

The whole discussion is flawed by the underlying conviction that rationality is a perfect or the best tool we have to fathom 'reality'. It's not. An excerpt from "The Ratio Illusion":

"For centuries people have tried to prove the existence of God by logical arguments. Using the same instrument - logic - atheistic fun?da?mentalists of today use a line of argu?ments which with religious ardency tries to prove that a holy principle can not exist. This discussion extended from theological and philoso?phical circles into science, where both pensive proponents of the belief that not everything can be explained by collisions of atoms, and rigorous mate?rialists exist.
This discussion is not always scientifically austere. For in?stan?ce, from the weakest parts of the old testimony a fretful little God is constructed - other parts of the bible or other religions are ignored - in order to grind up this God by eloquent lines of glibby arguments (e.g. Dawkins' book). The so-called many-world hypothesis of the big bang, which is used to explain the infinite small chance of the genesis of our universe, in fact is not a scientific theory but pure belief: it is not pos?sible to test the many-world concept nor can this model deliver any prediction - both necessary ingre?dients of any scientific theory.
The alternative hypothesis for the genesis of our universe, an act of creation, is becoming to be considered by a mino?rity of scien?tists who are flabbergasted by the unex?plai?nable precise adjust?ment of all known basic constants of nature including the charge of the electron, the gravi?ta?tional constant, the Planck constant, the cosmolo?gical con?stant, the strong and weak force, and many others.
Yet both groups, deniers and proponents of a holy principle beyond matter, in their assiduousness overlook the mystics. Human beings of both genders and immense saintliness called mystics, over all centuries and cultures, agree in their core teaching without knowing of each other. This is strange and has to be explained by anybody participating in the discussion on genesis and human fate.
Mystics teach us that they acquired the stalwart conviction that a non-personal holy numinous exists, not restricted by space and time, not describable by words other than nega?tions; that the insight into the numinous cannot be reached by sense perception nor logical deduction but only through intuitive, given insight; that the veracity of this insight ex?ceeds sense perceptions by far such that the products of our senses feel unreal compared to the sharp reality of the numinous; that this numinous collects all truth, beauty and goodness we can live to see; that the presence of the numi?nous can be felt anytime within and everywhere in nature; that our deepest core, our soul, is connected with the numi?nous in an unfathomable way but we ignore this con?nec?tion; that the purpose of our lives is to remove the igno?rance; that our allegedly most potent instrument for sear?ching, our ratio, just has to be layed off to start the search because it is not quite active search that is required but passive 'let-find'; that the greatest barrier in finding our?selves is selfishness in all its forms. "

Summary of The God Delusion

In his sensational international bestseller, the preeminent scientist and outspoken atheist Richard Dawkins delivers a hard-hitting, impassioned, but humorous rebuttal of religious belief. With rigor and wit, Dawkins eviscerates the arguments for religion and demonstrates the supreme improbability of the existence of a supreme being. He makes a compelling case that faith is not just irrational, but potentially deadly. In a preface written for the paperback edition, Dawkins responds to some of the controversies the book has incited. This brilliantly argued, provocative book challenges all of us to test our beliefs, no matter what beliefs we hold.
