Book Reviews of the The Glass Castle: A MemoirCustomer Review: Profoundly moving Summary: 5 StarsI saw Jeannette do a reading at a local bookstore before I bought this book, and at the time I was intrigued by the compassion she had for her parents when talking about them, despite what sounded like a childhood filled with poverty and sometimes neglect. That same attitude continues through her book, in a strong yet unique voice.
After hearing her speak, I knew that I would like this book, but I was shocked to find myself finishing it in two days - a record for me. I was completely captivated by her remarkable tale of survival and love. At times, I was utterly frustrated by her parents and yet impressed by the loving way in which the author portrayed them.
Ms. Walls said at her reading that she was really nervous about writing this book, and that she feared that she would lose repect from people if they knew where she came from. To the contrary, I found myself incredibly impressed by her courage, honesty and impeccable writing.
As another reviewer noted, it also made me think a lot about parenting. It was a different time, certainly, but sometimes I have to say that I thought her parents were right in some of their decisions around parenting, even if they sometimes held them to the extreme. They firmly believed that children need to make mistakes so they can learn from them, and that reading and learning was something the whole family did together. Growing up, she wanted for everything but as an adult she apprecitaed all that came to her, too. Like the main character in "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," Jeannette Walls' challenging upbringing made her smart, tough and self-reliant. Growing up without gave them something. It made me think of my nieces and nephews, who all have TVs in their (own) rooms, playstations, gameboys and the lot, yet who can stand in front of a full refrigerator and complain to their mothers that they're terrible parents because there's "nothing to eat." I think I'm giving a copy of this book to all of them for Christmas...
