Book Reviews of The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy

Book Review: Funny and realistic
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is highly readable, informative, and exceptionally realistic about many of the unpleasant aspects of childbirth. It's a real woman, discussing her (and her girlfriends) very real experiences. I don't agree with the reviewers who say that the author sounds judgmental about natural childbirth choices, etc. Her (correct) advise is to be open to changing your mind. She found the idea of natural birth too natural, but I think her main point is that any childbirth that results in a healthy mother and child is perfect, irrespective of the kinds of choices moms make about pain relief, etc. She's written this book to be the "regular girls" guide, and it is. It's the only pregnancy book I was able to read cover to cover, and before the end of my 9th week! It is certainly not meant to be a clinical guide (like e.g. Mayo Clinic's Guide), but it is readable and full of good info that you can ask your doctor about after you've read it. Now I'm passing this off to my husband for reading...I think he'll like it, too.

Book Review: Fun, Funny, and Informative
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is written from the perspective of a woman who has been through many of the experiences of pregnancy, and she's your "girlfriend" and guide through the entire experience. She and many friends share stories that will ease your mind regarding every aspect of the exciting experience of pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
The section about pregnant women's digestive habits (the embarrassing truth comes out) shed some light on the subject that few will venture to discuss. There are sections about maternity clothes, doctor visits and tests, shopping for baby, and of course, labor and delivery. Some of it is silly, and some of it needs to be serious. The silly certainly does a great job of distracting you from the scary/huge specter of giving birth.
This is a great intro to pregnancy, and again, a great distraction. It most certainly won't be your only reference, but it will ensure that regardless of whether you hate your maternity clothes or just have serious gas, you will never feel alone.

Book Review: You gotta' get this one!
Summary: 4 Stars

As a mother of three, and a childbirth educator, I can't tell you how important it is to be able to laugh during pregnancy. After all, the process of pregnancy really gives us a run for our money! I read the book during my first two pregnancies...reminding myself I was not alone as each month, and accompanying symptoms challenged my sense of comfort and self.

My husband and I still laugh to this day, when we recall our introduction to the concept of "The Titty Fairy"! Boy, does Iovine know how to call it like it is...

Book Review: Very Funny
Summary: 4 Stars

I did think that this book was extremely hilarious and for a lot of us, including myself, we can really relate to her. Obviously for some of you pregnancy was wonderful and had very little discomforts along the way. For those that can relate I think it's a great book and I would recommend it to my newly pregnant friends because MOST women do have at least some of the complaints she mentions.

Book Review: Like talking to your best friend
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is like listening to one of your best friends give her take on all things pregnancy. It's funny and informative. Honest and sincere. Great book for first timers that have tons of questions.
