Book Reviews of The Gift of Years: Growing Older GracefullyBook Review: Women in Theaology Choice Summary: 5 Stars
When my Women in Theaology group began reading this book (and yes, we spell Theology in the feminine) I saw delight and happiness in the members as we came to the table bi weekly to discuss Sr. Joan's book. Our back ground is ecumenical, eclectic and when discussing Gift of Years became electric as the enthusiasm and self realization passed from one to another. Would that others in our small MidWstern town be led to the self wonder and wisdom this book imparts! Sometimes I think that if I had to spend the rest of my life with but one group, it would be Women in Theaology -- Reading this book together confirms this!
Book Review: wonderful book for older readers Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great book for people in the last few decades of life. Sr Joan describes the trials and rewards of living into old age. I particularly like the end of each chapter where she describes the burdens and the blessings of each facet of growing old. Since I am experiencing many of these in my seventh decade of life it is reasurring to have her afirm what is so much the tasks and trials of living into our 70s, 80s and beyond. I have shared this book with many of my friends and will reread it many times myself.
Book Review: A guide book for the golden years Summary: 5 Stars
This book was a wonderful discovery for me. Joan Chittister has just the right words to make aging, not a grey time to dread, but a very alive time with new challenges, new discoveries. Every chapter addresses a topic of concern with wonderful ideas and advice. Her book is not filled with the old cliches about growing old. Her words are fresh and new and extremely inspiring. It's a book that belongs on your night stand because reading a chapter or two will put you to sleep with more peace in your heart.
Book Review: The Gift of Years Summary: 5 Stars
Our book club loves this book; we take 2 essays a week and discuss. One of the members at first did not like it because she did not like focussing on aging/being elderly.(We are all over 57). However, because of the diversity of the essays and the positive message of them, it's a unnanimus love of her writing.
I had read it previously, so recommended for the club. We are mostly a spiritually focused club, so approach all selections from that aspect.
Book Review: Almost Perfect Summary: 5 Stars
I am preparing to speak at a retreat for an older population in our church. This book is without question the best reference for looking at aging in a positive and uplifting manner. Well written, comprehensive - a must read for those of any age. I am also a chaplain at a hospital, and I will incorporate many of these principles and insights in my ministry. I am also 66 years old, and perhaps most importantly, it speaks to my heart.
