Book Review: Another Melendy Classic

I am now in my fifties, but my memories of the fond hours I spent in the company of Elizabeth Enright's Melendy family are still sharp. The bright sparkling personalities of Mona, Rush, Randy, and Oliver enlivened many hours for me, and I'm glad to see that they are still readily available.
In the Four Story Mistake, the Melendy family leaves their New York brownstone for a new home deep in the country. The house is called The Four Story Mistake, and its an ideal place for four highly intelligent, well read children. There are mysterious rooms, deep woods with streams running through them, and enormous gardens. Best of all is a huge attic room called The Office, where the children spend much of their time. the Melendys make new friends, uncover some secrets, and learn a lot about themselves and others.
Elizabeth Enright wrote beautifully and never insulted her child readers by assuming that something was too hard for them. As a result her books, especially the Melendy Quartet, remain fresh and lively after nearly seventy years.

Into the Four-Story Mistake, an odd-looking house with a confused architectural history, move the Melendy family -- Mona, Rush, Randy, Oliver, Father, and Cuffy, the housekeeper. Though disappointed about leaving their old brownstone in New York City, and apprehensive about living the country life, the four Melendy kids soon settle into this unusual new home. Here, they become absorbed in the adventures of the country, adjusting themselves with all their accustomed resourcefulness and discovering the many hidden attractions that the Four-Story Mistake has to offer.
The Four-Story Mistake is the second installment of Enright's Melendy Quartet, an engaging and warm series about the close-knit Melendy family and their surprising adventures.
