Book Reviews of The Foods and Wines of SpainBook Review: Awesome variety and presentation Summary: 5 Stars
I really love the variety presented in this book. It has tons of recipes for all sorts of skill levels. So if you want to make something elaborate for Spanish night or whatever, this one has you covered, but unlike other ethnic cookbooks, this one also has you covered if you just want to whip something together in a few minutes. I've done a couple of the elaborate recipes and they've all been great, but the really great thing is the number of ten-minute recipes that use between three (!) and five common ingredients, yet still turn out notably Spanish. The funny thing is that before all of simplest recipes, the author often says that it's actually one of her husband's favorite dishes and one that she ends up making most often.
Added to that, all the side recommendations and advice that is given about each recipe and ingredients, this is by far the best ethnic cookbook I've ever owned. I can't imagine it being anything other than five stars.
Book Review: This is the most authentic Spanish cookbook available. Summary: 5 Stars
Out of the many Spanish cookbooks that I own, Foods and Wines of Spain is by far the most authentic and informative. I lived in Spain for several years, and I know the country and its cusine very well. In Penelope Casa's book you will find authentic recipes from all of Spain's diverse regions. If you want to be transported instantly to real Spanish food, this is book to own. The recipes are easy to follow and generally require common, everyday ingredients found in most kitchens. I have made many of the recipes, all with great success, and as a result, I have converted many of my friends and family to the exciting world of Spanish cooking. More than just a cook book, the author writes of the culinary history of Spain, making this a truly interesting book.
Book Review: Even the Spaniards use it! Excellent book. Summary: 5 Stars
I first came across this book at my brother's home in Valencia, Spain. He had grown up in the US but met his Spanish wife in Spain and made his home there. Both he and his wife use this cookbook to prepare many of the traditional dishes.
I had owned a couple of other Spanish cookbooks and never seemed to find anything exciting in them. I purchased this book in about 2002 and learned many of the traditional dishes that I've had in Spain with incredible authenticity. My cooking of the dishes was never disappointing and truly were as delicious as I remembered them. I've since bought this book for a few friends and everyone has been amazed at the results from these recipes. I highly recommend you buy it and enjoy it as we all have.
Book Review: Marvelous Summary: 5 Stars
I am thilled with this cookbook. It should not have been a surprise that Spanish cuisine is so good, given that country's culinary raw materials: the sea, olives & garlic, peppers/paprika, citrus, almonds, saffron, rice, pork.... Then there's the influences from the Basques, North Africa, Persia and Rome. The climate provides a wealth of produce and great wines. Ms Casas makes this style of cooking accessible with her obvious love for Spain and the food. Her recipes are straightforward without sacrificing authenticity. My only gripe is that she advises that canned stock is OK. Please make your own stock unless you are desperate!! (as in, the cat knocked the fresh stock off the counter) BUY THIS BOOK!
Book Review: Great Gift Summary: 5 Stars
My husband is very fond of authentic Spanish cuisine. Since it was more economical than a trip to Spain I purchased this book for his last birthday. A year has gone by, but it may have been the most successful birthday gift I have ever given to him. He now enthusiastically makes dinners for me several times a month just so he can keep trying out new recipes! The food (and the generosity of my husband) is wonderful. Most of the recipes in the book can be made with ingredients that you have on hand anyway and the results are well worth it. Check out the recipes for Garlic Chicken, Spanish Tortilla and Veal Extremena and see for yourself.
