Book Reviews of The Firm: A NovelBook Review: Wow. Great action, mystery and suspense. Can a smart young lawyer overcome unbelievable odds and outwit the Mafia and FBI? Summary: 5 Stars
STORY BRIEF:
Mitch is graduating from Harvard Law School in the top 5 of his class. He has several job offers from top wall street firms as well as a 40-man law firm in Memphis. The Memphis firm offers him more money and perks than the others, so he takes the job. He does not know that the firm is run by the Mafia. They have listening devices in every employee's home, car, office, etc. No one ever leaves the firm except by death. Five lawyers were killed during recent years under vague circumstances. After a few months, the FBI approaches Mitch asking his help in getting evidence against the firm. Mitch refuses, but he is now suspicious and curious.
REVIEWER'S OPINION:
One of the best books I've read. It's a little slow at first, but worth it. About half way through I couldn't stop reading. I was obsessed with staying with it until the end. There is a lot of suspense, danger and risk. Mitch is smart and does a lot of neat things in unbelievably high risk situations. The only caution I have is that it was hard for me to sleep for a couple of nights, because I kept reliving parts of the story. I couldn't stop thinking about it.
After reading the book I watched the movie directed by Sidney Pollack. I couldn't believe it. They changed many events from the book, which I did not like, for example. In the book A does something, but in the movie B does it and with different motivations. The ending in the book was great; in the movie it was totally different, not even close. In the movie, they added a supposedly clever conversation that didn't exist in the book. I expect movies to cut scenes due to time limits, but to create a conversation that never happened in the book? It didn't feel right to me. It was the scene in which the firm gives an envelope to Mitch with his salary inside. In the movie, they want him to guess what it is. Bottom line, if you see the movie, try not to link it to John Grisham, he is much better than that.

Summary of The Firm: A NovelWhen Mitch McDeere signed on with Bendini, Lambert & Locke of Memphis, he thought that he and his beautiful wife, Abby, were on their way. The firm leased him a BMW, paid off his school loans, arranged a mortgage, and hired the McDeeres a decorator. Mitch should have remembered what his brother Ray?doing fifteen years in a Tennessee jail?already knew: You never get nothing for nothing. Now the FBI has the lowdown on Mitch?s firm and needs his help. Mitch is caught between a rock and a hard place, with no choice?if he wants to live. D.W. Moffett uses his youthful voice to outstanding effect in this excellent abridgment of Grisham's bestselling thriller about a Harvard Law grad aggressively recruited by a curiously obscure firm. "We're small and very selective... we screened over two thousand third-year law students at the best schools. Only one letter was sent." They've decided he's their man and to get him they offer top dollar, dangle a BMW, and woo his wife with offers impossible to refuse. But as the wide-eyed youngsters soon discover, there's a catch. Moffett gives an excellent performance, bringing the story to life with vibrant and believable characterizations and a smooth, knowing narrative. (Running time: 3 hours, 2 cassettes) --George Laney
