Book Reviews of The Fiery Cross (Outlander)

Book Review: Did we all read the same book?
Summary: 5 Stars

I was really surprised that so many people rated this book so poorly!

This was the first book I read in the Outlander series, and the one that got me hooked! The historical detail was great, and I loved the fact that Gabaldon covered *all* aspects of daily life, not just the exciting ones. Granted, some bits got a bit repetitive, but that's real life. (It was also somewhat amusing to note that most of the objections of "ickiness" came from men; bodies ooze, guys. Deal with it.) It's hard, and it happens every day. One of the things I enjoyed the most was that, in the descriptions of the "minor" characters, a sense is given of how culture carried over from Europe to the colonies. So often I find that people, even historians, have an odd disconnect between European and American history, as if they're separate strands meeting only during wars, rather than branches of a single tree, entwining and overlapping in countless ways. This book conveyed that feeling, without beating the reader over the head with it.

As for there being no plot, I found it to be just the opposite. Having recently read the first book in the series, I can see that there's a difference in the plot structure between the two books. Outlander was fast-paced and direct. Any extra threads lead quickly back to the main story. Fiery Cross, however, is a bit more subtle. There are numerous small threads to this story, but none are unimportant. Even having read none of the previous books, I understood that a number of things were coming to a head, and that the groundwork was being laid for future books.

Bottom line: If you want one, solid, continous, action-packed, plot-driven story, then go read something else. If you can appreciate vivid character sketches and depictions of the full range of human experience, and if you enjoy waiting to see how a dozen pieces form a larger picture, then don't skip this book.

Summary of The Fiery Cross (Outlander)

New York Times bestselling author Diana Gabaldon mesmerized readers with her award-winning Outlander novels, four dazzling tales featuring eighteenth-century Scotsman James Fraser and his twentieth-century time-traveling wife, Claire Randall. Now, in this eagerly awaited fifth volume, Diana Gabaldon continues their extraordinary saga, a masterpiece of pure storytelling that is her most astonishing Outlander novel yet....

The year is 1771, and war is coming. Jamie Fraser?s wife tells him so. Little as he wishes to, he must believe it, for hers is a gift of dreadful prophecy?a time-traveler? s certain knowledge. Claire?s unique view of the future has brought him both danger and deliverance in the past; her knowledge of the oncoming revolution is a flickering torch that may light his way through the perilous years ahead?or ignite a conflagration that will leave their lives in ashes.
The fiery cross, once used to summon Highland clans to war, now beckons readers to take up Diana Gabaldon's fifth installment in the Outlander series featuring the time-traveling Frasers. Historical fiction fans who have waited four long years since the publication of Drums of Autumn will thrill to Gabaldon's trademark detail and sensuality, both displayed liberally throughout the nearly 1,000 pages of The Fiery Cross. In this pre-Revolutionary War period, Claire Fraser and her husband, Jamie, have crossed oceans and centuries to build a life together in the bucolic beauty of North Carolina. But tensions both ancient and recent threaten not only Claire and James, but their daughter, Brianna, her new husband, Roger, and their infant son, Jemmy, as well as members of their clan. Gabaldon delivers on what she does best: poignant storylines, empathetic characters, meticulous detail, and searing passion. Savor every carefully chosen word, readers; it may be a long time until the next installment! --Alison Trinkle
