Book Review: The reality

I really like David Drake, so I am biased.
The Far Side of the Stars could be tough on readers I suppose, due to the effort David Drake puts into details on how things are constructed, how they operate, and what they look like - whether they are man-made, or a bug, or a large sea creature. He rationally and emotionally describes how his cultures, societies, miltary organizations, governments, criminal organizations, and commercial trade is set up and functions. Whether it is a small rodent, massive contruction project, local merchant, taxi driver, street walker, data/telecommunications relay, money market, or the tires on a mud-muck skidmobile, he never leaves me in doubt.
I rarely find technical mistakes on items or systems of which I possess personal/knowledge or experience. His Renaissance-Man knowledge and extensive researching abilities and make it integral to his stories, and sometimes slow them down. However, I get a vivid mini-novel on each place or planet he describes.
Yeah, this story drags on a bit (not as bad as Some Golden Harbor) but I think Drake is a prophet of the non-politically correct far-future when space travel and other planets have been settled. Affairs are often going to be settled based on skillful diplomacy, instant action, brawls, technical skills, and war...
Summary of The Far Side of the Stars
While the Republic of Cinnabar is at peace with the Alliance, warriors like Lt. Daniel Leary and Signals Officer Adele Mundy must find other work--like escorting a pair of wealthy nobles on an expedition to the back of beyond! The Princess Cecile, the corvette in which they carved their reputations in letters of fire, has been sold as a private yacht, but she still has her guns, her missiles, and her veteran crew. Daniel and Adele will need all of those things as they face winged dragons, an Alliance auxiliary cruiser, jealous lovers, and a mysterious oracle which really does foresee the future. That won't be enough, though, when they penetrate a secret Alliance base and find a hostile fleet ready for a war that will sweep Cinnabar out of a strategically crucial arm of the galaxy. Preventing that will involve skill, courage, and more luck than a sane man could even pray for; and it will require a space battle on a scale that a tiny corvette like the Princess Cecile has no business being involved in. But she'll be in the middle of it anyway, because Daniel, Adele, and their Cinnabar crew would never turn their backs on a fight!
