Book Review: Practical Resource

The Facilitator's Fieldbook, 2nd Ed, is an excellent practical reference book for any Facilitator. If you are a manager going into more facilitative practices, this has specific pointers; as a facilitator gaining experience, this offers a wide variety of processes with pros and cons; as an experienced facilitator, it is a reminder of other options to those habitually employed. The information is logically presented, clearly explained, and easily understood.
Some things that worked well for me are:
* Breadth and depth of information and processes
* Diagrams and examples of processes discussed
* Clearly enumerated steps of processes
* Tips on the processes and when to use information
* Some of the newer organizational development processes included, like open space and appreciative inquiry
There were a few surprises for me, as well, when brain-writing and affinity processes were not included in the brainstorming segment neither was capturing exact verbs and nouns from participants when charting listed as a trust builder. Some of the large scale interventions were abbreviated enough that it might be difficult for a new facilitator or manager to implement.
There is always more that can be included! At 450 pages this is an excellent reference for any practitioner's use.
