This is the book that American education sorely needs. As an activist for American educational improvement, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

The book opens by discussing why students should study math in the first place. The author puts aside standard explanations to provide a different, refreshingly honest perspective. The book then goes on to discuss the Asian system of teaching math from a cognitive perspective, but in simple, easy to understand language. The book continues with an analysis of motivational methods, clearly explaining why some work and others do not. The remainder of the book goes into more specifics, discussing the SAT and SAT, self perceptions, gender differences, and finishes with a discussion of advanced teaching methods.

Whether you are a parent, educator, or activist, this book is an absolute must. Without question, this is one of the most interesting and unusual books about teaching math, and is exactly what American education needs right now.
