I really enjoyed this book due to my interest in beginning a career in ultramarathoning. The author isn't a superhero, he doesn't light up the running world with his effort in the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run, but then most people don't. For me, that is the great thing about this book. I could easily relate to his effort, to his mental, physical and emotional highs and lows as he endured nearly 24 hours of running in his bid to earn the coveted silver belt buckle. There are points where the author wanders, but this follows perfectly with his style of reflection coupled with the description of the run. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in what an ultrarunner goes through or who's contemplating such a run themselves.
Summary of The End of the Trail: A 100 Mile Running Odyssey
The author, a runner of average ability, describes his running of the 1986 Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run, the country's most well known ultra endurance running event. The story was written twenty years after he completed the race, and he looks back and shows how the race has becme a metaphor for his own life. This account takes the reader literally step by step through every section of his race toward his destiny with the finish line. You will live his high and low points during the race, the physical and mental obstacles he faces, and his thoughts about the race and life as he runs on the trail. The many hours he spends during the day and nighttime hours is a memorable experience, one of great determination to reach the finish line.Sports Books
